We present a method to determine the direction of a magnetic field in an experimental volume by analyzing the polarization of resonant optical radiation and data that demonstrate this method with a single trapped 40Ca+ ion. With a single trapped 40Ca+ ion, the results are insensitive to the magnitude of the magnetic field, the laser intensity, the ...

Equatorially Coordinated Lanthanide Single Ion Magnets
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2014The magnetic relaxation dynamics of low-coordinate Dy(III) and Er(III) complexes, namely three-coordinate ones with an equatorially coordinated triangle geometry and five-coordinate ones with a trigonal bipyramidal geometry, have been exploited for the first time.

Unexpected behavior of single ion magnets
Coordination Chemistry Reviews, 2020Abstract Slow magnetic relaxation, as a prerequisite of the single-ion magnetism, is a rather common feature identified for hundreds of the first-row transition metal complexes. A paradigm is generally accepted that the relaxation time τ is dominated by high barrier to spin reversal Ueff that is proportional to the absolute value of the axial zero ...

Toward Molecular 4f Single-Ion Magnet Qubits
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2016Quantum coherence is detected in the 4f single-ion magnet (SIM) Yb(trensal), by isotope selective pulsed EPR spectroscopy on an oriented single crystal. At X-band, the spin-lattice relaxation (T1) and phase memory (Tm) times are found to be independent of the nuclei bearing, or not, a nuclear spin.

Evaporable lanthanide single-ion magnet
CrystEngComm, 2016Two thermally stable single-ion magnets containing a dysprosium ion with the ligand fod (1,1,1,2,2,3,3-heptafluoro-7,7-dimethyl-4,6-octadione) and bpy (2,2′-bipyridine) or phen (1,10-phenathroline) were synthesized, named 1Dy (Dyfod3bpy) and 2Dy (Dyfod3phen).

Magnetic Dynamics of a Neodymium(III) Single-Ion Magnet
Inorganic Chemistry, 2018Slow relaxation of magnetization is observed in a neodymium(III) single-ion magnet based on phosphine oxide, which successfully extends our pentagonal bipyramidal family to light lanthanides. Comprehensive magnetic characterizations reveal that the magnetic dynamics follow the power law that corresponds to a Raman process, despite an energy splitting ...

Series of Lanthanide Organometallic Single-Ion Magnets
Inorganic Chemistry, 2012The synthesis, structures, and magnetic properties of a series of lanthanide organometallic mixed sandwich molecules, (Cp*)Ln(COT), are investigated, where Cp* is the pentamethylcyclopentadiene anion and COT is the cyclooctatetraene dianion and Ln represents Tb(III), Dy(III), Ho(III), Er(III), and Tm(III).

Connecting single-ion magnets through ligand dimerisation
Dalton Transactions, 2012A mononuclear as well as dinuclear Dy(III) complexes of general formula [Dy(hmb)(NO(3))(2)(DMF)(2)] (1) and [Dy(2)(hmt)(NO(3))(4)(DMF)(4)]·DMF (2), where Hhmb: (N'-(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)benzohydrazide and H(2)hmt: (N(1),N(4))-N'(1),N'(4)-bis(2-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzylidene)terephthalohydrazide were obtained using a synthetic strategy involving

Slow magnetic relaxation in hexacoordinated cobalt(ii) field-induced single-ion magnets
, 2020To gain a better insight into the factors affecting the enhancement of the energy barrier in single molecule (single ion) magnets, three hexacoordinate cobalt(II) complexes based on the tridentate ligand 2,6-bis(pyrazol-1-yl)pyridine (pypz) and ...
