Single Mode Fiber Optic Components
IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1981In the process of studying single-mode fiber optic systems it became rapidly apparent a few years ago that it would be desirable to perform a number of functions with in-line components, which would allow for signal processing without the removal of the optical signal from the fiber.

Single-mode fiber-optic polarizer
Optics Letters, 1980A technique is presented for the fabrication of high-quality single-mode fiber-optic polarizers. Properties of polarizers made using this technique include extinction ratios in excess of 60 dB as well as low loss for the desired polarization.

Single-mode optical fiber cable
Applied Optics, 1979A single-mode optical fiber cable was manufactured; loss increase characteristics due to cabling were evaluated. The existence of wide V-value regions without cabling loss increases is shown by a suitable selection of fiber parameters and optical wavelengths.

Single-mode optical fiber goniometer
Optics Letters, 1992A two-element single-mode optical fiber goniometer that uses graded-index microlens receivers is presented that measures the angular orientation of a remote laser. The goniometer exhibits a sensitivity of 1.0 V/mrad and a calculated shot-noise-limited angular resolution of 1.0 nrad/ radicalHz.

All Single Mode Fiber Optic Gyroscope
Optics Letters, 1981We present an optical fiber gyroscope that, for the first time, is composed completely of single-mode fiber-optic components. This system has increased simplicity and stability over previous bulk-optic designs and has the potential for very high rotation sensitivity.

Single-mode fiber-optic directional coupler
Applied Optics, 1982A low-loss compact single-mode fiber optical directional coupler (SMF-ODC) is developed for use in SMF reflectometers or gyroscopes. The SMF-ODC is made of two sapphire ball lenses, a half-mirror, and two ferrules. Two fibers (endfaces are concave) are aligned parallel to each other in the ferrule. The optical and mechanical axes are tilted. Cross-talk

Single-mode fiber-optical polarization rotator
Applied Optics, 1979A birefringent single-mode optical fiber is twisted mechanically in alternating sense on successive half-wave fiber sections. This arrangement, applicable in-line to a fiber, permits continuous adjustment of the state of polarization at the fiber output.

Single-mode optical-waveguide fiber coupler
Applied Optics, 1978A single-mode fiber coupler to the Ti diffused LiNbO(3) strip waveguide has been devised. The influences of three axial displacements and two angular misalignments on the coupling efficiency have been investigated at 6328-A wavelength. The coupler has a special feature wherein coupling degradation caused by fiber displacement after connection can be ...
