Birefringent optical filters in single-mode fiber
Optics Letters, 1981In-line fiber-optic spectral-bandpass filters with one, two, three, and four elements are designed in analogy to the Sole filters of bulk optics by bending the fiber into the form of small coils, which are rotated to suitable angles and arranged between polarizers.

Characterization of single-mode optical fiber filters
Applied Optics, 1981The fabrication of narrowband highly reflecting filters in single-mode step-index fibers was reported recently by Hill et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 32, 647 (1978)]. The underlying effect on which these filters are based is a photoinduced refractive-index change in the GeO(2) used as a core dopant in SiO(2) fibers.

Single-mode optical-waveguide fiber coupler
Applied Optics, 1978A single-mode fiber coupler to the Ti diffused LiNbO(3) strip waveguide has been devised. The influences of three axial displacements and two angular misalignments on the coupling efficiency have been investigated at 6328-A wavelength. The coupler has a special feature wherein coupling degradation caused by fiber displacement after connection can be ...

Single-mode fiber-optical polarization rotator
Applied Optics, 1979A birefringent single-mode optical fiber is twisted mechanically in alternating sense on successive half-wave fiber sections. This arrangement, applicable in-line to a fiber, permits continuous adjustment of the state of polarization at the fiber output.

Single mode optical fiber sensors
1995Single mode fibers are used for sensing when extreme sensitivity is required or when a well defined polarization of light is needed at a remote sensing point. Most sensors which use single mode fibers are of the intrinsic type (i.e. the action of the measurand on the light occurs within the fiber itself). The sensitivity advantage of single mode fibers

Single-mode fiber-optic demultiplexer
Soviet Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1987A study was made of the properties of fused single-mode biconical couplers fabricated in a high-frequency electric discharge. A multiplexer–demultiplexer was constructed for the first time with an interval of 1.5 nm between the channels, channel isolation of 20 dB, and excess losses of 0.2 dB.

Single-Mode Optical Fiber Characterization
Optical Engineering, 1985The measurement of the relevant parameters of single-mode optical fibers (namely, cutoff wavelength, mode field diameter, chromatic dispersion, and refractive index profile) is discussed, with explicit reference both to the work carried out within the Comite Consultatif International Telephonique et Telegraphique (CCITT) and to original techniques ...

Single-polarization single-mode optical fibers
IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1981Strictly speaking, an ordinary axially symmetrical single-mode fiber is a "two-mode" fiber because two orthogonally polarized HE 11 modes can be propagated in it. This fact results in the instability of the polarization state of the propagated mode when geometrical perturbation exists in the fiber, and also the so-called polarization mode dispersion ...

Optical field mapping using single-mode optical fibers
Applied Optics, 1978A new method of measuring the complete optical field distribution (optical field mapping) is proposed and is applied to the measurement of Gaussian beam distribution at its beam waist. This method utilizes an interference technique and uses two single-mode optical fibers as flexible paths.
