SINGLE-MOLECULE MAGNETS EVOLVE

Chemical & Engineering News Archive, 2011
AN UNUSUALLY UNSYMMETRICAL organometallic complex made up of an erbium atom sandwiched between two different aromatic hydrocarbon rings exhibits unique magnetic behavior, a new study shows.

Magnetic Tweezers for Single-Molecule Manipulation

2011
Magnetic tweezers provide a versatile tool enabling the application of force and torque on individual biomolecules. Magnetic tweezers are uniquely suited to the study of DNA topology and protein-DNA interactions that modify DNA topology. Perhaps due to its presumed simplicity, magnetic tweezers instrumentation has been described in less detail than ...

Magnetization tunneling in single-molecule magnets

Polyhedron, 2001
The quantum mechanical tunneling of the direction of magnetization is discussed for several examples of single-molecules magnets (SMM’s). SMM’s are molecules that function as nanomagnets. Magnetization tunneling is described for two crystallographically different forms of [Mn12O12(O2CC6H4-p-Me)16(H2O)4] solvate.

Magnetic Tweezers for Single-Molecule Experiments

2009
Over the last decade, single-molecule techniques have proven their wide applicability in the study of processive motor proteins and other enzymes, yielding insight into their kinetics and mechanochemistry. In the context of force spectroscopy of protein–nucleic acid interactions, optical tweezers, magnetic tweezers, and atomic force microscopy have ...

Single-Molecule Toroics and Multinuclear Lanthanide Single-Molecule Magnets

2015
In this chapter, we first give a clear definition for single-molecule toroic (SMT) on the basis of the toroidal magnetic moments of ground doublets present in triangular Dy3 SMMs, which is further exemplified via several typical Dy-based single-molecular magnets (SMMs) showing toroidal magnetic moments.

NMR in magnetic single molecule magnets

2007
In the last years there has been a great interest in magnetic systems formed by a cluster of transition metal ions covalently bonded via superexchange bridges, embedded in a large organic molecule. Following the synthesis and the structural and magnetic characterization of these magnetic molecules by chemists, the physicists realized the great interest
