Siphons

2022
“Siphons” is a poetry collection motivated by a dream in which a kitchen cockroach admitted to me that they appear in spaces where life has happened, that they siphon memories. I’m interested in how poetry can explore the perspective of reframing and reckoning with fear and love both in a familial and ecological sense. My poems honor the love languages

Siphon regeneration in Ciona

Nature, 1975
IN 1923 Paul Kammerer summarised research which he claimed demonstrated the inheritance of acquired characteristics. Since the success of Mendelian genetics had already made Kammerer's work suspect a report of his lecture1 was followed by a long and acrimonious debate. Siphons and siphonal grooves in the digestive systems of the Echinoidea (Echinodermata)

Zoomorphology, 2008
Here we use histological sections and, to a limited extent, scanning electron microscopy to ascertain whether siphons or siphonal grooves parallel the stomach of five sea urchin species representing five higher taxa in the Echinoidea. We find a siphonal groove in Centrostephanus coronatus of the Diadematidae and in Caenopedina diomedeae of the ...

Siphons, Revisited

The Physics Teacher, 2011
The siphon is a very useful example of early technology, the operation of which has long been well understood. A recent article1 makes the claim that established beliefs regarding this device are incorrect and proposes a “chain model” in which intermolecular forces within the fluid play a large role while atmospheric pressure does not.

The Siphon Balance

American Journal of Physics, 1955
A balance of special design demonstrates the principle of the siphon, and incidentally, if desired, that of Archimedes at the same time. A vertical rod, ending at the top in a hook that hangs from a knife-edge, supports a horizontal platform at its center.
