Journal of Ecology, Volume 109, Issue 1, Page 541-571, January 2021., 2021 Crataegus monogyna is a shrub or small tree native to almost the whole of Britain, and to Europe generally excepting its northern and southern margins. Hawthorn has a wide ecological range and is an important component of hedges. It can colonize derelict or abandoned arable land forming dense scrub and thicket.
