海牛目(Sirenia)是全世界三大水生兽类的类群之一(另为鲸类和鳍脚类)。其外形呈纺锤形,颇似小的鲸鱼;但是,其似鲸而非鲸,从形态上到演化上,均与鲸类完全不同,二者区分之处如下: (1) 海牛的颈虽短,但毕竟有颈部,能弯曲;鲸无颈,体形完全似鱼,头与躯干直接相联接。 (2) 海牛的鼻部宽而钝,中央有一个垂直的沟,其两侧还各有一垂直的沟;任何鲸类无上述的沟。
