Phenotypic and genotypic characterization of fifty strains of Beauveria spp. (Ascomycota, Cordycipitaceae) fungal entomopathogens from diverse geographic origins against the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae)

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 80, Issue 10, Page 5064-5077, October 2024.
The characterization of strains with potential to be used as biocontrol agents, is imperative for the development of efficient products. Environmental conditions (temperature and UV radiation) determine the effectiveness of these strains in the field.

Feeding Deterrents against Two Grain Storage Insects from Euphorbia fischeriana

open access: yesMolecules, 2011
The screening of several Chinese medicinal herbs for insecticidal principles showed that Euphorbia fischeriana roots possessed significant feeding deterrent activity against two stored-product insects (Tribolium castaneum and Sitophilus zeamais).

Laboratory-scale hermetic storage of wheat and maize against the infestation of red flour beetle (Tribalism castaneum) and maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The objective of this project was to determine the effect of hermetic storage conditions on red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum) and maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais), and to hopefully reduce infestation during storage. This project used 4 oz.

The sublethal impacts of five insecticidal formulations on Oryzaephilus surinamensis behavioral traits

open access: yesPest Management Science, Volume 80, Issue 10, Page 5334-5341, October 2024.
Deltamethrin, α‐cypermethrin, and λ‐cyhalothrin provided high toxicity to Oryzaephilus surinamensis. λ‐Cyhalothrin and deltamethrin extended stop times; α‐cypermethrin reduced walks and increased climbing attempts. Insecticides did not affect the interval spent on food. Abstract BACKGROUND Mortality caused by various pyrethroids, and neonicotinoids has

Sustainable Maize Storage Technology Adoption in Ghana: Implications for Postharvest Losses, Farm Income, and Income Inequality

open access: yesFood and Energy Security, Volume 13, Issue 5, September/October 2024.
ABSTRACT The Purdue Improved Crop Storage (PICS) bag, a sustainable post‐harvest storage technology, can address the high postharvest losses that are a major threat to economic development, food security and the environment in Africa. However, there is limited empirical research on this technology.

Effects of insecticidal ketones present in mint plants on GABA A receptor from mammalian neurons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
The genus Mentha, an important member of the Lamiaceae family, is represented by many species commonly known as mint. The insecticidal activity of Mentha oil and its main components has been tested and established against various insects/pests.

Trait‐dependent plasticity erodes rapidly with repeated intergenerational acclimation in an invasive agricultural pest

open access: yesPhysiological Entomology, Volume 49, Issue 3, Page 202-215, September 2024.
Single acute heat acclimations were repeated at 35°C and 38°C for adult P. truncatus parents, F1 and F2; thermal and ecological traits were assessed in each generation. Acute acclimation responses were trait dependant, whereas critical thermal limits were ramping rate dependant.

Modulation of Aleurone Peroxidases in Kernels of Insect-Resistant Maize (Zea mays L.; Pob84-C3R) After Mechanical and Insect Damage

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2020
Peroxidases (PODs) have many biological functions during the plant life cycle. In maize kernels, endosperm PODs have been identified as biochemical contributors to resistance against Sitophilus zeamais, but their identities have not been determined.
