Abstract Sitosterol-3- 14 C was converted by a Digitalis lanata plant to progesterone, digitoxigenin, gitoxigenin, and digoxigenin. The results indicate that sitosterol functions as a starting material for the biosynthesis of other steroids in plants.

Beta-sitosterol is the most prevalent plant cholesterol derivative (phytosterol) and can undergo similar oxidation to cholesterol, leading to beta-sitosterol oxides. The biological impact of phytosterol oxides has only been evaluated in a phytosterol blend (usually of beta-sitosterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and dihydrobrassicasterol).

Abstract Tritium labeled β-sitosterol was administered orally to 5 normal humans and to 5 terminal patients. Isolation of tritium-labeled sterols from plasma and red blood cells of normal male subjects showed some absorption had occurred, but it was much less than for comparable doses of labeled cholesterol.

The effect of increasing levels (0–1.0%) of dietary cholesterol has been studied in the Mongolian gerbil. A consistent and proportional elevation of serum cholesterol was observed after one week of cholesterol administration. In addition, the simultaneous administration of ß-sitosterol prevented this hypercholesteremia.
