Size and ageing of the scientific community in Chile

Scientometrics, 1993
The size and ageing of the Chilean scientific community was studied using as data the individuals actively engaged in research projects funded by the National Fund for Scientific and Technological Development (FONDECYT). Between 1982 and 1991, 4966 individuals participated at least once, either as responsible for the research or as qualified associate ...

Family size and age at menarche in athletes

Medicine &amp Science in Sports &amp Exercise, 1997
The association between family size and age at menarche was evaluated in 370 university athletes representing seven sports, 291 white and 79 black. Age at menarche, number of children in the family (family size), and birth order were collected retrospectively by questionnaire with a follow-up interview if necessary.

Marine reserves: size and age do matter

Ecology Letters, 2008
Abstract Marine reserves are widely used throughout the world to prevent overfishing and conserve biodiversity, but uncertainties remain about their optimal design. The effects of marine reserves are heterogeneous. Despite theoretical findings, empirical studies have previously found no effect of size on the effectiveness of marine ...

The Size and Age of the Universe

Nature, 1936
IT has often been said that the history of the race is that of the individual writ large, and this remark is specially applicable to the question of the size of the universe. The new-born child is unable to form an adequate conception of the size of the world, probably because it takes its cradle or its nursery as its unit of measurement.

Size‐mediated ageing reduces vigour in trees

Ecology Letters, 2005
AbstractThere is increasing interest in understanding the costs and benefits of increased size and prolonged lifespan for plants. Some species of trees can grow more than 100 m in height and can live for several millennia, however whether these achievements are obtained at the cost of some other physiological functions is currently unclear.

Size and Age of the Universe

Science, 1981
The age of the universe based on abundances of isotopes is in the range 10 billion to 15 billion years. This is consistent with the age range 12 billion to 20 billion years calculated from the evolution of the oldest galactic stars. A third estimate of the age of the universe is based on the Hubble relation between the velocities of ...

Family size and age of menarche

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1972
direction. Variations in the degree of cervical funneling might account for the variable degrees of migration. In 3 patients in whom the medium-sized Type r\ tent was used, the tents migrated sufficiently far into the uterine cavities so that the tents were not visible and coulcl be palpated at various depths in the cervical canal.

Body Size and Age in Amphibians and Reptiles

Journal of Herpetology, 1988
We question the widespread assumption that body size and age are strongly correlated in adult amphibians and reptiles. Data for the smooth newt (Triturus vulgaris) suggest that growth rate prior to the age of first breeding is a much more significant source of variance in body size than age.

Synthesis of size controlled Ag nanoparticles

Journal of Molecular Catalysis A: Chemical, 2004
Abstract The parameters influencing the size of synthesized Ag nanoparticles are reported. The particles size decreased with increasing stabilizer: AgNO 3 molar ratio, decreased with increasing amount of methanolic NaOH added until an optimum amount was reached, and decreased with small amount of methanolic HCl added but increased rapidly on further

Influence of body size and age on mitral ring motion

Clinical Physiology, 1997
Left ventricular systolic and diastolic function can be assessed by studying mitral ring motion. Reference values for a wide range of age and body size are lacking however. The motion of the mitral ring was studied with M‐mode echocardiography using the apical four‐ and two‐chamber views.
