Empirically Evaluating the Effects of Perceptual Information Channels on the Size Perception of Tangibles in Near-Field Virtual Reality

IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces, 2021
Immersive Virtual Environments (IVEs) incorporating tangibles are becoming more accessible. The success of applications combining 3D printed tangibles and VR often depends on how accurately size is perceived.

My own face looks larger than yours: A self-induced illusory size perception.

Cognition, 2021
Size perception of visual objects is highly context dependent. Here we report a novel perceptual size illusion that the self-face, being a unique and distinctive self-referential stimulus, can enlarge its perceived size.

Virtual Room Re-Creation: A New Measure of Room Size Perception

ACM Symposium on Applied Perception, 2021
The perception of the size of indoor rooms is traditionally measured with spaciousness ratings or verbal estimations of width and length, but these measures inherently focus on specific aspects of rooms that may not accurately capture a holistic ...

Garment Sizes in Perception of Body Size

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 2003
This paper reports an experimental investigation of the effect of garment size on perceived body size. The perceived body sizes of three Chinese men (thin, medium, and obese build) wearing different sizes of white T-shirts were assessed using Thompson and Gray's 1995 Nine-figural Scale in 1 (thinnest) to 9 (obese) grade and a newly-proposed method ...

VALUE AND SIZE PERCEPTION

Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, 1966
A detailed review is presented of studies related to the accentuation hypothesis of Bruner & Goodman (1947). It is found that the results from (1) coin studies, (2) symbol studies, and (3) other studies are conflicting and do not substantiate the hypothesis.

Resting EEG in alpha band predicts individual differences in visual size perception.

Brain and Cognition, 2020
Human visual size perception results from an interaction of external sensory information and internal state. The cognitive mechanisms involved in the processing of context-dependent visual size perception have been found to be innate in nature to some ...

Virtual Hand Realism Affects Object Size Perception in Body-Based Scaling

IEEE Conference on Virtual Reality and 3D User Interfaces, 2019
How does the representation of an embodied avatar influence the way in which one perceives the scale of a virtual environment? In virtual reality, it is common to embody avatars of various appearances, from abstract to realistic. It is known that changes

Perception of Body Size in Schizophrenia

Archives of General Psychiatry, 1962
In an earlier preliminary study, Cleveland 1 found that schizophrenics overestimate body size when making size judgments from photographs of body parts. Moreover, schizophrenics exceeded a hospital control group in size estimates made from photographs of such body parts as a heart and stomach, as well as a hand and foot.

Understanding public perception of bra size

Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery, 2022
Breast cup size is often used in conversations between patients and their surgeons to communicate about goals and expectations for postoperative results. Cup size, however, is a poorly defined concept. The goal of this study was to assess whether the perception of breast cup size is consistent in a general population of survey respondents.A survey ...
