Size Effects of Hair-Sized Structures – Torsion

Key Engineering Materials, 2004
Conventional strain-based mechanics theory does not account for contributions from strain gradients. Failure to include the strain gradient contributions can lead to underestimates of stresses and size-dependent behaviors in small-scaled structure [1]. This paper focus on the structural size effects on torsion of cylinders.

Controlled Folding of Micrometer-Size Structures

Science, 1995
Several types of microactuators have been fabricated, from simple paddles to self-assembling and -disassembling cubes. Conducting bilayers made of a layer of polymer and a layer of gold were used as hinges to connect rigid plates to each other and to a silicon substrate.

Size Scaling in the Decay of Metastable Structures

Physical Review Letters, 1996
The rate of thermal decay of special fabricated structures on Si(111) has been measured for structure sizes ranging from 28 to 50 \AA{} high. The mechanism of the decay via motion of individual steps has been observed directly using scanning tunneling microscopy.

Size-structured models

2019
Abstract This chapter begins by revisiting the M’Kendrick/von Foerster model, but using size instead of age as the state variable. It then uses the lessons from that model to describe how individual growth and mortality rates determine both stand distributions (a population of mixed ages) and cohort distributions (all one age).

Size and Structure Effects

1998
The functionality of molecules cannot be discussed without considering the role of environmental molecules. Since 1980 the role of environmental molecules has been studied in terms of molecular clusters. This chapter considers some typical examples that demonstrate the size-dependence of proton transfer reactions, the size-dependence of the location of

A COURSE ON SIZE AND STRUCTURE

PRIMUS, 2003
ABSTRACT This paper describes a general education course that begins with proportion and logarithms (base 10), and that culminates in students' reading and presenting recent frontier research from a variety of disciplines. The theme of the course is that many disciplines use relative size to explain apparently unrelated phenomena.

Innovation, Market Structure, and Firm Size

The Review of Economics and Statistics, 1987
The hypothesis that the relative innovative advantage between large and small firms is determined by market concentration, the extent of entry barriers, the composition of firm size within the industry, and the overall importance of innovation activity is tested.

Size Constancy in Structure from Motion

Perception, 1995
The relative motions of points in a structure-from-motion display involving parallel projection provide depth information in an object-centered framework: differences in velocity do not reflect differences in distance from an eyepoint. In contrast, size constancy is generally regarded to be a perspective effect, based on the relationship between ...

The structural cause of file size distributions

ACM SIGMETRICS Performance Evaluation Review, 2001
We propose a user model that explains the shape of the distribution of file sizes in local file systems and in the World Wide Web. We examine evidence from 562 file systems, 38 web clients and 6 web servers, and find that the model is a good description of these systems.

PERCEPTION OF ANGLE SIZE IN NEURON STRUCTURES

Kybernetes, 1976
A multilayer neuron structure which enables one to evaluate the size of a perceived angle is considered. The proposed neuron structure permits one to distinguish intersecting lines from non‐intersecting ones, parallel lines from non‐parallel ones, horizontal lines from vertical ones; and to determine the distance between parallel lines.
