This article discusses the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostics, and implications for home care clinicians who may encounter patients with this syndrome. Chronic pain is discussed as well as interventions to manage symptoms such fatigue, dry eyes mouth and skin.

Sjogren-Larsson Syndrome

Sjogren-Larsson syndrome is a rare disease characterized by the occurrence of mental retardation, spastic diplegia and ichthyosis. The involvement of brain and skin is justified by a mutation in FALDH gene that affects the metabolism of fatty acids and leads to abnormal accumulation of lipids.

Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disorder of the exocrine glands with associated lymphocytic infiltrates of the affected glands. Dryness of the mouth and eyes results from involvement of the salivary and lacrimal glands. The accessibility of these glands to biopsy enables study of the molecular biology of a tissue-specific autoimmune process.

Sjogren’s syndrome is the commonest connective tissue disease in clinical practice, more common than lupus and nearly as common as rheumatoid arthritis. Sjogren’s syndrome is not uncommon in India. Patients usually do not volunteer a history of dry eyes and dental caries is often not linked to the rheumatic condition.
