Fishing characters of skate ray, Raja pulchra by the offshore longline fishery in Heuksan-do, Korea [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the Korean society of Fisheries Technology, 2011
Catches, CPUE, fishing season, disc width composition and fishing ground were studied to rebuild skate ray, Raja pulchra resource by the offshore longline fishery in Heuksan-do, Korea. Annual catches and CPUE of skate ray were increased from 2003 to 2010 (CPUE: from 2007 to 2010) continuously.

Survey sequencing and comparative analysis of the elephant shark (Callorhinchus milii) genome.

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2007
Owing to their phylogenetic position, cartilaginous fishes (sharks, rays, skates, and chimaeras) provide a critical reference for our understanding of vertebrate genome evolution.

Comparative genomics of chondrichthyan Hoxa clusters

open access: yesBMC Evolutionary Biology, 2009
Background The chondrichthyan or cartilaginous fish (chimeras, sharks, skates and rays) occupy an important phylogenetic position as the sister group to all other jawed vertebrates and as an early lineage to diverge from the vertebrate lineage following ...

Early life sensory ability—ventilatory responses of thornback ray embryos (Raja clavata) to predator-type electric fields [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Predator avoidance is fundamental for survival and it can be particularly challenging for prey animals if physical movement away from a predatory threat is restricted. Many sharks and rays begin life within an egg capsule that is attached to the sea bed.

Our shifting perspectives on the oceans [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
In the last 15 years new research findings have radically reshaped our understanding of human effects on ocean ecosystems. Here I describe five major shifts in perspective that reveal our impacts to be more severe and persistent than previously ...

Molecular markers reveal spatially segregated cryptic species in a critically endangered fish, the common skate (Dipturus batis) [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2010
Many sharks and skates are particularly vulnerable to overfishing because of their large size, slow growth, late maturity and low fecundity. In Europe dramatic population declines have taken place in common skate (Dipturus batisL.), one of the largest demersal fish in regional shelf seas, leading to extirpations from substantial parts of its former ...

Reproductive biology of the eyespot skate atlantoraja cyclophora (Elasmobranchii: Arhynchobatidae) an endemic species of the southwestern atlantic ocean (34ºs - 42ºS) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Atlantoraja cyclophora is an endemic skate to the continental shelf of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (22ºS-47ºS) and a bycatch species in commercial bottom trawl fisheries. The morphometric relationships, the size at maturity and the reproductive cycle

Cartilaginous fish diversity in the Western Visayas, Philippines, including two putative unidentified species and the first record of Carcharhinus plumbeus (Elasmobranchii: Carcharhiniformes: Carcharhinidae) [PDF]

open access: yesActa Ichthyologica et Piscatoria
This annotated checklist documents the diversity of cartilaginous fishes, including sharks, batoids (rays and skates), and chimaeras, from Panay and Guimaras islands, Western Visayas, Philippines, through surveys at fish markets and ports.

Commercial catches, reproduction and feeding habits of Raja asterias (Chondrichthyes: Rajidae) in a coastal area of the Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy, northern Mediterranean) [PDF]

open access: yesActa Adriatica, 2007
A total of 52 “rapido” (towed toothed beam gears) trawls were monitored in late winter-summer of the 1999-2000 period to assess the R. asterias size structure at this time of higher yields as well as 36 fishing operations performed by “volantina” (trawl ...

Epigonal Conditioned Media from Bonnethead Shark, Sphyrna tiburo, Induces Apoptosis in a T-Cell Leukemia Cell Line, Jurkat E6-1

open access: yesMarine Drugs, 2013
Representatives of Subclass Elasmobranchii are cartilaginous fish whose members include sharks, skates, and rays. Because of their unique phylogenetic position of being the most primitive group of vertebrates to possess all the components necessary for ...
