In brief Sixty-two patients with rollerskating injuries were seen over an 18-month period. Most (71%) of the patients were girls and women, and ages ranged from 6 to 62 years. Most injuries were caused when the skaters lost their balance and fell backwards onto their hands.

The range of injuries sustained at an ice-rink and presented to an Accident Service department is described. A total of 203 patients with 222 injuries presented themselves during a 2-month period. There were 103 noteworthy injuries, including 61 fractures, 2 dislocations and 2 severed tendons, but the commonest injuries were wounds, sprains and bruises.

Influence of figure skating skates on vertical jumping performance
Journal of Biomechanics, 2006The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of wearing figure skating skates on vertical jump performance and interjoint co-ordinations described in terms of sequencing and timing of joint rotations. Ten national to international figure skaters were filmed while performing a squat jump (SJ) on a force platform.

An increasing number of patients who have sustained injuries while roller skating are being seen in emergency departments; more can be expected. One hundred consecutive charts of patients who presented to the emergency department after roller skating accidents were reviewed. Sixty-five percent of patients had sustained a fracture or dislocation.

Figure skaters who train regularly sustain primarily lower extremity injuries, especially overuse injuries. Quadriceps and hamstring stretching may help prevent or decrease anterior knee pain. Foot and ankle problems may be related to the rigidity of the leather skating boot.
