The dental plate on bichir pectoral fins: A unique dermal skeletal element bearing individual odontodes with tooth‐like replacement

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Pectoral fins of bichirs encompass the so‐called dental plates – unique dermal skeletal elements with individual odontodes identical to the oral teeth. Abstract The dermal skeleton appeared early in vertebrate evolution in the form of mineralized skin denticles composed of tooth‐like units—odontodes.

Molecular insights into electroreceptor ribbon synapses from differential gene expression in sturgeon lateral line organs

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
The expression of various genes involved in synapse development, stability and/or function was studied in developing mechanosensory neuromasts and electrosensory ampullary organs in sterlet sturgeon. Most were shared, including Slc17a8, Slc1a3 and Nrxn3, but Cbln18 was neuromast‐restricted and Tulp1 was ampullary organ‐restricted.

Identifying and Mapping Industrial Districts Through a Spatially Constrained Cluster‐Wise Regression Approach

open access: yesJournal of Regional Science, Volume 65, Issue 2, Page 403-428, March 2025.
ABSTRACT The aim of this article is to exploit an innovative spatial econometric approach to map and study the evolving patterns of industrial districts (IDs). The procedure can be classified as a k‐means cluster‐wise regression procedure and is designed to detect homogeneous areas of subcontracting activity.

Differences in muscle oxygenation, perceived fatigue and recovery between long-track and short-track speed skating

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2016
Due to the technical nature of speed skating, that is affecting physiological mechanisms such as oxygenation and blood flow, this sport provides a unique setting allowing us to uncover novel mechanistic insights of the physiological response to exercise ...

Agreement between muscle saturation breakpoints and lactate thresholds: Muscles comparison and sex difference in world‐class Nordic skiers

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Near‐infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has emerged as a potential alternative method for determination of breakpoints equivalent to lactate thresholds. However, the optimal NIRS location remains unclear, particularly in Nordic skiing, which requires both upper‐ and lower‐limb contributions.

Intramuscular pathways of maladaptation in overtraining syndrome

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The transition from adaptive overreaching to maladaptive overtraining and mechanisms through which excessive training load can lead to performance decline. Four interconnected pathophysiological domains are highlighted: neural fatigue, involving both central and peripheral components such as altered sensory feedback and reflex ...

Early‐life Giardia infection and behavioural dysregulation in two dogs: A case‐based exploration of the gut microbiome–brain axis

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, Volume 14, Issue 2, May 2026.
Abstract This case report describes two dogs exhibiting severe behavioural problems, both diagnosed with early‐life giardiasis and raised in environments lacking adequate maternal care and socialisation. Both dogs experienced chronic gastrointestinal and dermatological issues, as well as prolonged early‐life stress, which likely contributed to ...

Interactions of Mucus Monosaccharides and the Epidermal Microbiome in Four Benthic Elasmobranchs

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 2, April 2026.
Here we collected mucus and microbes from the skin of Elasmobranchs to identify interactions between mucus and the microbial community. We identified key microbial genes involved in the metabolism of mucus carbohydrates in Elasmobranchs. ABSTRACT Epidermal mucus is a complicated mixture of macromolecules which acts as the first line of defence for ...
