Mechanisms of parasite‐mediated disruption of brain vessels

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Parasites can affect the blood vessels of the brain, often causing serious neurological problems. This review explains how different parasites interact with and disrupt these vessels, what this means for brain health, and why these processes matter. Understanding these mechanisms may help us develop better ways to prevent or treat brain infections in ...

A digital assistant for shading paper sketches

open access: yesVisual Computing for Industry, Biomedicine, and Art, 2020
We present a mixed reality-based assistive system for shading paper sketches. Given a paper sketch made by an artist, our interface helps inexperienced users to shade it appropriately.

Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Conserved structural motifs in PAS, LOV, and CRY proteins regulate circadian rhythms and are therapeutic targets

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Cryptochrome and PAS/LOV proteins play intricate roles in circadian clocks where they act as both sensors and mediators of protein–protein interactions. Their ubiquitous presence in signaling networks has positioned them as targets for small‐molecule therapeutics. This review provides a structural introduction to these protein families.

Path Learning From Navigation in Aging: The Role of Cognitive Functioning and Wayfinding Inclinations

open access: yesFrontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2020
Aging coincides with a decline in navigation and wayfinding abilities, but it is unclear to what extent factors relating to a given individual may contribute to mitigating this decline.

An ecohydrological sketch of climate change impacts on water and natural ecosystems for the Netherlands: bridging the gap between science and society [PDF]

open access: yesHydrology and Earth System Sciences, 2012
For policy making and spatial planning, information is needed about the impacts of climate change on natural ecosystems. To provide this information, commonly hydrological and ecological models are used.

ESKEMAP: exact sketch-based read mapping

open access: yesAlgorithms for Molecular Biology
Abstract Background Given a sequencing read, the broad goal of read mapping is to find the location(s) in the reference genome that have a “similar sequence”. Traditionally, “similar sequence” was defined as having a high alignment score and read mappers were viewed as heuristic solutions to ...
