Determinants of maximal oxygen uptake in highly trained females and males: a mechanistic study of sex differences using advanced invasive methods

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The results from this study show that maximal cardiac output, stroke volume and leg blood flow are similar between highly trained females and males after normalisation to lean body mass (LBM). However, the 10% higher haemoglobin concentration ([Hb]) and arterial O2 content in males result in higher systemic and leg O2 delivery ...

Reduced cardiovascular mortality at moderate altitude: a putative role of physical activity and body mass

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Benefits of performing physical exercise at moderate altitude. At moderate altitude, increased resting metabolic rate and physical exertion promote physical fitness and exercise tolerance, whereas hypoxia suppresses appetite and elicits adaptations that increase tissue O2 delivery while augmenting O2‐independent ATP production ...

When the lights come on: The hidden carbon cost of a brightening world

open access: yesAgricultural &Environmental Letters, Volume 11, Issue 2, December 2026.
Dark, low‐emission agricultural regions act as carbon sinks. As these landscapes urbanize, artificial light at night accelerates ecosystem respiration while land conversion drives fossil‐fuel emissions, together producing a carbon double shock that converts a carbon sink into a carbon source—a transition not yet captured by current NDC frameworks ...

Observations from the Kentucky Corn Yield Contest reveal mid‐ to late‐season weather, early planting, and planting population drive high corn yield

open access: yesCrop, Forage &Turfgrass Management, Volume 12, Issue 2, December 2026.
Abstract Corn (Zea mays L.) is the most valuable row crop on a land area basis in Kentucky. Understanding the effects of management practices employed by farmers in high‐yielding corn fields in Kentucky is essential for identifying both challenges and opportunities in corn production.

Current Status and Trajectory of Macroalgal Restoration in Aotearoa New Zealand

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 60, Issue 4, December 2026.
Macroalgal forests dominate many rocky reef ecosystems across Aotearoa New Zealand, spanning a broad latitudinal gradient from subtropical‐to‐subantarctic waters. These habitats are characterised by high diversity and structural complexity, supporting productive coastal food webs that provide for numerous culturally and economically important species ...

Utilizing high‐throughput phenotyping to identify metribuzin tolerance in winter wheat

open access: yesThe Plant Phenome Journal, Volume 9, Issue 1, December 2026.
Abstract Plant breeders and weed scientists address weed management collaboratively by selecting for herbicide tolerance in breeding programs. Metribuzin, a Group 5 PSII‐inhibiting herbicide, is labeled for use in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). However, application to currently available lines results in frequent, variable, and unpredictable crop injury.

Drew Rothrock's Fundamental Contributions to Arctic Science

open access: yesPerspectives of Earth and Space Scientists, Volume 7, Issue 1, December 2026.
Abstract David Andrew (Drew) Rothrock III lived during a period of vigorous scientific research in the Earth Sciences, from the International Geophysical Year to the era of satellites and high‐speed computer modeling. Drew made fundamental contributions to Arctic science, helping to lay the theoretical foundations for modeling the movement and ...

Exploring the Potential of Unmanned Aerial System‐Based Topographic Indices Maps to Evaluate Storm Drain Positioning

open access: yesJournal of Flood Risk Management, Volume 19, Issue 4, December 2026.
ABSTRACT Urbanisation, climate uncertainty, and limited city budgets have heightened the need for efficient urban drainage management. While advanced hydrodynamic models assess the performance of drainage networks, they are computationally intensive, time‐consuming, and expensive.
