Parasitic skin diseases in cats

ABSTRACTParasites are important causes of skin disease in cats. In this article 10 species of parasites (Table 1) will be discussed. In the United Kingdom, the flea is the most important single cause of skin disease in cats. The most common flea found is Ctenocephalides felis, with hedgehog, dog and rodent fleas being found occasionally.

The prevalence of intestinal protozoans and helminths in stool samples of individuals with allergic cutaneous symptoms was evaluated to study a possible link between parasites and allergy. Altogether, 218 patients who had chronic urticaria, atopic dermatitis, or pruritus of unknown origin were included in the study.
