Translational Considerations for Injectable Biomaterials and Bioscaffolds to Repair and Regenerate Brain Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The repair and regeneration of brain tissue faces both biological and technical challenges. Injectable bioscaffolds offer new opportunities to stimulate tissue regrowth in the brain by recruiting neural stem cells. Here, the translational issues are reviewed that need to be address to advance this promising new therapeutic approach from the bench to ...

Ethmoid Sinus Mucocele Penetrating the Anterior Skull Base: A Case Report [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Rhinology
Sinus mucoceles are nonmalignant cystic tumors lined by non-neoplastic epithelium, typically involving the frontal and ethmoid sinuses. Although it is common for these mucoceles to cause destruction of surrounding bone tissue due to their growth ...

Understanding the Effects of Conductive Polymer Electrode Coating on Recorded Neural Signals

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Conductive polymer coatings are widely explored to improve the quality of signals recorded with chronically implanted neural electrodes, offering enhanced biocompatibility along with reduced electrode impedance. Combining computational modelling and data from PEDOT:PTS coated and PtIr electrodes in rats, we show that improvements in signal quality with

Experimental study of skull bones reconstruction with the use of autografts and hydroxyapatitical gel

open access: yesJournal of Education, Health and Sport, 2018
Introduction. To conduct reconstructive surgical interventions at pathological processes of skull base bone, defects of the temporal bone and dura mater, is especially complicated with the appearance of liquorrhea.

Temporally Delayed Deployment of Photo‐Responsive Liquid Crystal Polymer Networks Toward Neural Interfaces

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Deployable medical devices typically need external stimuli to trigger deployment. However, external stimuli are difficult to supply within tissues. Here, we describe a strategy to deploy small‐scale structures into soft tissues after insertion without the need for any stimulus. We demonstrate deployment within a tissue phantom.

Anterior Skull Base Reconstruction: Does Fat Preparation Matter?

open access: yesJournal of Neurological Surgery Reports, 2018
Objectives This article aims (1) to determine whether there is any difference in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak rate after anterior skull base autologous fat reconstruction based on how the fat is prepared, and (2) to measure impact on surgical times by ...
