Colour and Brightness of the Sky

Nature, 1951
IN a recent flight in a De Havilland ‘Comet’ aircraft, measurements were made of the chromaticity (colour), luminance (brightness) and polarization of the sky as observed at heights of 20,000 and 40,000 ft., and of the colour temperature and illumination of the sun's light at 40,000 ft. The results are briefly reported in this communication.

A recording sky scanner for the brightness distribution of sky

Journal of Scientific Instruments, 1965
The principle and working of a new design of a sky scanner are given. It can be used for continuously recording the luminance distribution over the entire sky vault, starting from the horizon and reaching the zenith in a spiralling manner.

Sky Brightness Photometer

1970
This report explains the design development of, and includes the operation manual for, a Sky Brightness Photometer developed by NCAR. This photometer was developed to make continuous measurements of atmospherically scattered light at a position close to the edge of the solar disk. Two prototype instruments were built and tested at NCAR.

Measurements of the Brightness of the Twilight Sky

Journal of the Optical Society of America, 1952
With a recording photometer of photopic sensitivity, measurements were made of many points in the sky during twilight for solar altitudes H=+5° to −15° for clear air and no clouds at two stations, one in Maryland, altitude 30 meters, and one on Sacramento Peak, New Mexico, altitude 2800 meters.
