A Phosphorylation‐Induced Micellization Switch in the Low‐Complexity Domain of TDP‐43
Phosphorylation of TAR DNA‐binding protein's 43 kDa (TDP‐43) low‐complexity domain by casein kinase 1 delta (CK1δ) acts as a molecular switch, redirecting its self‐assembly from macroscopic phase separation toward finite‐sized, spherical block‐copolymer micelles of ∼30 nm.

A Paradox of LED Road Lighting: Reducing Light Pollution Is Not Always Linked to Energy Savings
A variety of LED types can be employed for street and road lighting purposes. White phosphor-converted LEDs represent the most widely used option. However, amber LEDs are increasingly being used to reduce some negative effects associated with light ...

The spatial structure of polar auroras is described by the fractal dimension of glow fluctuations and its anisotropy from direction. The fractal dimension is estimated from the slope in the logarithmic axes of the spectrum in the range of 1.5–50 km ...

Sky Glow Measurements in the Netherlands [PDF]
Sky glow was measured in the Netherlands in 1992 and in 1997. The 1992 measurements were photographic surveys, assessed in the Netherlands and in Japan, whereas the 1997 measurements were limit-star assessments. In all cases, the number of measurements was very small. The three sets of data are compared.

The “Sky-Coloured Clouds” or Twilight Glows [PDF]
THERE can, I think, be no doubt that the numerous descriptions which have appeared of the recent twilight phenomena relate to essentially the same phenomenon as the “sky-coloured clouds”, or, as the late O. Jesse called them, the “luminous night-clouds”. On June 30 and July 1, which seem to have been the principal dates, I was unfavourably situated for

A Method for Optical Quantification of Local Oxygen Limitations in Multiphase Bioreactors
ABSTRACT Spatial oxygen limitation is a major source of physiological stress and metabolic, scale‐dependent heterogeneity in aerobic bioprocesses. In gas‐liquid stirred tank reactors, oxygen availability is governed by hydrodynamics and mass transfer and is therefore inherently non‐uniform.

The Effect of Public Lighting on Sky Glow [PDF]
ABSTRACTThe principal reason that public lighting exists is that it fulfills the needs for: traffic safety, personal security, comfort and pleasantness, and environmental esthetics.

ABSTRACT Ecotourism encourages environmentally friendly travel; however, little is known about the underlying value systems influencing travelers' choices and actions. This study uses a mixed‐method methodology that combines post hoc qualitative analysis with a large‐scale quantitative survey to examine the influence of multiple value dimensions on ...

We report on night time air glow imaging observations of the low latitude ionosphere by means of a 630-m all-sky imager in stalled in March 2006 at Yonaguni, Japan (24.5°N, 123.0°E; 14.6°N geomagnetic), about 100 km east of Taiwan.

Abstract When I was 12, my family told me a story about their community falling apart and coming together, a time when someone tried putting a nuclear facility in their (our?) hometown. Since we moved when I was too young to remember, the story had little significance until I embarked on a “hometown” ethnographic journey for my dissertation.
