Automatic Sky View Factor Estimation from Street View Photographs—A Big Data Approach [PDF]
Hemispherical (fisheye) photography is a well-established approach for estimating the sky view factor (SVF). High-resolution urban models from LiDAR and oblique airborne photogrammetry can provide continuous SVF estimates over a large urban area, but such data are not always available and are difficult to acquire.

Sky-view factor approximation using GPS receivers
International Journal of Climatology, 2002AbstractA technique is described which allows the real time measurement of sky‐view factors by proxy. A simple and inexpensive global positioning system (GPS) receiver is used to acquire satellite visibility data, which is then used to develop indices related to the sky‐view factor of a location.

A fast approach for large-scale Sky View Factor estimation using street view images
Abstract Sky View Factor (SVF) is one of the most useful urban spatial indicators for radiation and thermal environmental assessment. Estimating SVF with circular fish-eye photos is straightforward and convenient and can account for obstruction of vegetation and other urban infrastructures.

Graphical estimation of sky view-factors in urban environments
Journal of Climatology, 1987AbstractA technique is described whereby sky view‐factors in urban locations can be estimated from graphs once azimuth and elevation angles of surrounding buildings are known. The graphs are easy to use and give results sufficiently accurate to enable their use when more elaborate computing or photographic equipment is unavailable.

The effect of sky view factors on optimized photovoltaic fields
Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy, 2018Photovoltaic (PV) fields deployed in multiple collector rows, with two modules one on the top of the other, experience uneven incident diffuse radiation due to the difference in the modules' sky view factor. It is plausible that the two modules may be installed with different inclination angles to obtain an improved field design compared to a common ...

Sky view factors in forest canopies calculated with IDRISI
Theoretical and Applied Climatology, 2001The sky view factor (SVF) is used in forest, road and urban climatology to characterise radiative properties. We now propose a method suitable for forest canopies using the raster based and commercially available software IDRISI. It uses quadratic pixels in rows and columns in a scanned equiangular fish-eye image.

ABSTRACTThe sky view factor (SVF) is a commonly used indicator in research fields of urban microclimate such as the urban heat island (UHI). Analytical methods have been widely adapted in SVF estimation with the development of accurate three dimensional (3D) data, in which, however, the sky radiance is usually assumed to be isotropic. In this study, we

Effect of Sky View Factor on Outdoor Temperature and Comfort in Montreal
Environmental Engineering Science, 2014Abstract The relationship between the sky view factor (SVF) and the urban heat island (UHI) effect in Montreal is explored, by assessing the effect of SVF on air temperature ( T a ) and mean radiant ...

A technique for massive sky view factor calculations in large cities
International Journal of Remote Sensing, 2018In many applications, such as urban physics simulations or the study of the solar impact effects at different scales, complex 3D city models are required to evaluate physical values.
