Global artificial light masks biologically important light cycles of animals

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and the Environment, Volume 23, Issue 4, May 2025.
We document the importance of low‐light conditions in 136 animal species and then translate the new world atlas of skyglow, which reports artificial night sky brightness, into estimates of anthropogenic illuminance (that is, artificial light reaching Earth's surface).

Marine artificial light at night: Implications and potential hazards for offshore songbird and bat movements in the Greater North Sea

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 7, Issue 3, March 2025.
Human activity in the North Sea is intensifying, which amplifies the need to understand better the biological implications of human activities in the ecoregion. Here we aim to characterize the impacts of artificial light pollution at night (ALAN) on offshore migratory songbirds and bats and discuss the potential for scientifically informed ...

MISFITS, POWER, AND HISTORY: RETHINKING ABILITY THROUGH AN ANIMAL LENS

open access: yesHistory and Theory, Volume 64, Issue 1, Page 75-95, March 2025.
ABSTRACT In this article, we construct a critical history of “ability” by focusing on the specific case study of dark‐dwelling animals and the ways in which they have been understood over the course of modernity. Such creatures were frequently the subjects of assumptions and judgments about what they could and could not do.

Species traits to guide moth conservation in anthropogenic regions: A multi‐species approach using distribution trends in Flanders (northern Belgium)

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 17, Issue 6, Page 1016-1032, November 2024.
By applying Multi‐Species Change Indices to over 1.8 million citizen scientist observations from 1980 to 2022, we assessed the distributional changes of macro‐moths in Flanders (northern Belgium)—a highly anthropogenic region in Northwest Europe—by linking temporal trends to 10 key ecological and life history traits.

Ultraviolet Imaging of the Globular Cluster 47 Tucanae [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
We have used the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope to obtain deep far-UV (1620 Angstrom), 40' diameter images of the prototypical metal-rich globular cluster 47 Tucanae. We find a population of about 20 hot (Teff > 9000 K) objects near or above the predicted

Heavy migration traffic and bad weather are a dangerous combination: Bird collisions in New York City

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 61, Issue 4, Page 784-796, April 2024.
Although legislation to turn off unnecessary nocturnal lighting for the entirety of the migration seasons may be an ultimate goal, a proximate goal invaluable for reducing collisions will be predicting which nights will be of highest risk and using this information to determine when mitigation efforts could be most effective.

Statistical modelling and satellite monitoring of upward light from public lighting [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this work, we propose an approach to estimating the amount of light wasted by being sent towards the upper hemisphere from urban areas. This is a source of light pollution.

Nighttime sky/cloud image segmentation

open access: yes, 2017
Imaging the atmosphere using ground-based sky cameras is a popular approach to study various atmospheric phenomena. However, it usually focuses on the daytime. Nighttime sky/cloud images are darker and noisier, and thus harder to analyze.

Hot Populations in M87 Globular Clusters [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
We have obtained HST/STIS far- and near-UV photometry of globular clusters in four fields in the gE galaxy M87. To a limit of m(FUV) = 25 we detect a total of 66 globular clusters (GCs) in common with the deep HST optical-band study of Kundu et al. (1999)

Characterizing Transiting Extrasolar Planets with Narrow-Band Photometry and GTC/OSIRIS

open access: yes, 2010
We report the first extrasolar planet observations from the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC), currently the world's largest, fully steerable, single-aperture optical telescope.
