A Photoelectric Skylight Polarimeter

Applied Optics, 1966
A photoelectric skylight polarimeter to measure directly the Stokes parameters for plane polarized light is described. The basic principle of the instrument consists in the simultaneous measurement of the intensity of light (in the chosen spectral region) transmitted by polarizers oriented in four specific directions.

Polarized skylight navigation

Applied Optics, 2016
Vehicle state estimation is an essential prerequisite for navigation. The present approach seeks to use skylight polarization to facilitate state estimation under autonomous unconstrained flight conditions. Atmospheric scattering polarizes incident sunlight such that solar position is mathematically encoded in the resulting skylight polarization ...

Photoelectric Skylight Polarimeter

Review of Scientific Instruments, 1963
A photoelectric skylight polarimeter employing a retardation plate as a polarization modulator with constant angular and linear apertures is described in detail. The operational wavelength range of the instrument extends from the near ultraviolet to the far end of the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum (∼3000 to 6500 Å). A brief discussion of

Polarization of Skylight

1951
Around 1811, Arago discovered the partial polarization of the light from a clear sky during his extensive studies of the polarization of light. He found the polarized component to be either perpendicular (positive polarization) or parallel (negative polarization) to the plane defined by the directions from the observer to sun and from the observer to ...
