Increasing sedentary time, minimum dietary energy requirements, and food security assessment

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
Abstract We compute corrections for sedentary behavior in physical activity levels (PALs) and incorporate them along with corrections for over estimation of basal metabolic rates (BMRs) into threshold caloric intakes, known as minimum dietary energy requirements (MDERs).

Advancements in Machine Learning for Microrobotics in Biomedicine

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Microrobotics is an innovative technology with great potential for noninvasive medical interventions. However, controlling and imaging microrobots pose significant challenges in complex environments and in living organisms. This review explores how machine learning algorithms can address these issues, offering solutions for adaptive motion control and ...

Artificial Intelligence‐Enhanced, Closed‐Loop Wearable Systems Toward Next‐Generation Diabetes Management

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Recent advancements in wearable healthcare have brought accessible continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMs) for diabetes management. To address the limitations of CGMs, closed‐loop systems utilizing monitored glucose levels for insulin dosing are being developed.

Extra-auditory effects of noise in laboratory animals: the relationship between noise and sleep [PDF]

open access: yesJ Am Assoc Lab Anim Sci 46, 1 (2007) 35-41, 2008
Noise has both auditory and extra-auditory effects. Some of the most deleterious extra-auditory effects of noise are those leading to sleep disturbances. These disturbances seem to be related to both endogenous (physical parameters) and exogenous (sex, age) factors of noise.

Autonomous Navigation of Bio‐Intelligent Cyborg Insect Based on Insect Visual Perception

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
The bio‐intelligent cyborg insect (BCI) introduces a noninvasive ultraviolet‐based control method, leveraging natural sensory behaviors for adaptive navigation. By integrating biological and artificial intelligence, BCI minimizes habituation and enhances locomotion in complex environments.

Acute symptomatic epi attacks in the Operation of emergency medical service: Case report [PDF]

open access: yesABC: časopis urgentne medicine, 2016
INTRODUCTION: Acute symptomatic epi attacks are attacks that are provoked by temporary action of systemic, metabolic, toxic and other factors with epileptogenic effect (high febrility, hypoglycemia, hypoxia, alcohol, lack of sleep, etc.) or they occur ...

Biologically inspired sleep algorithm for artificial neural networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2019
Sleep plays an important role in incremental learning and consolidation of memories in biological systems. Motivated by the processes that are known to be involved in sleep generation in biological networks, we developed an algorithm that implements a sleep-like phase in artificial neural networks (ANNs).

“Who's breaking the law … not us, them!”: Inside immigration detention in Portugal

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Community Psychology, EarlyView.
Abstract In this paper, we examine immigration detention in Portugal, a system whose daily operations and inherent violence are overlooked in both public and academic discourses. Even within community psychology, discussions on immigration detention have largely remained on the fringes of scholarly debates. Guided by a justice‐centered ecological lens,
