Tardigrades, also known as water bears or moss piglets, can survive in extreme environmental conditions thanks to some intriguing chemistry. These microscopic free-living animals are found on land and in fresh and marine waters. They stay alive when subjected to intense cold, drought and other harsh conditions by entering a state known as cryptobiosis.
