We present SL, a new programming language of the synchronous reactive family in which hypotheses about signal presence/absence are disallowed. One can decide that a signal is absent during an instant only at the end of this instant, and so reaction to this absence is delayed to the next instant.

Design and Testing of the SL Cable
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, 1984This paper describes the design of armorless and armored lightguide cable for use in the AT&T SL undersea lightwave system. Mechanical and optical test results from laboratory experiments and field trials are summarized. We review the effect of hydrogen on optical-fiber loss, and discuss its control in the cable structure.
