Production of a high-velocity water slug using an impacting technique
Review of Scientific Instruments, 2014A pulsed water jet consists of a series of discrete water slugs travelling at high velocity. Immediately after striking a target, these slugs apply high-intensity, short-duration transient stress pulses reaching an amplitude known as the water hammer pressure, followed by low-intensity, long-duration stationary stress at a lower stagnation pressure ...

The measurement of interface velocity in solid–liquid slugging fluidised beds
Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, 2003Abstract A new experimental apparatus based on conductivity measurements has been developed to measure liquid and solid phase volume fractions in fluidised suspensions. The device provides a measurement of the instantaneous values of volume fractions: this characteristic has been used here to estimate the velocity at which voidage discontinuities ...

Influence of the gas and liquid superficial velocity on slug frequency
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2013Slug flow is a kind of hazardous gas-liquid two-phase flow pattern encountered in pipelines and wells for natural gas production which may cause the vibration and destruction of the pipelines. An important parameter of slug flow is slug frequency, the study of which can be used to reduce the hazards of slug flow.

Slug velocity measurement using acoustic emission technology
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, 2014Two-phase flow is a common phenomenon that exists in the petroleum and chemical engineering industrial fields. An important feature employed to describe two-phase flow is the flow regime which varies depending on the individual velocities of the components within the two-phase flow. One of these regimes, the slug regime, can create significant pressure

Air-Oil Slug Flow In an Upward-Inclined Pipe - I: Slug Velocity, Holdup And Pressure Gradient
Journal of Canadian Petroleum Technology, 1974Abstract Experiments were performed with the co-current flow of two-phase "mixtures of air and a light oil in a transparent 1-inch-diameter" pipe at angles of inclination varying from 0 to 10 degrees above the horizontal.

Velocity Oscillation and Pressure Drop in Water–Air Slug Flow
Volume 7: Fluids and Heat Transfer, Parts A, B, C, and D, 2012Visualization and pressure drop measurements of water–air two-phase flow in circular microchannels (d = 486 μm) was conducted. In order to investigate effects of the flow rates and T-junction size on the pressure drop of the two-phase slug flow, three test channels containing various T-junctions (136, 194, and 252 μm) were prepared.

Minimum slugging velocity in fluidized beds containing vertical rods
Fuel, 1994A new method for determining the onset of slugging in fluidized beds is presented. Pressure-drop fluctuations, measured from below the distributor to the gas exit line, are transformed to the frequency domain by the power spectral density function (PSDF). The dominant frequency of the PSDF corresponds to the eruption frequency of bubbles or slugs.

Solids deposition in low-velocity slug flow pneumatic conveying
Chemical Engineering and Processing: Process Intensification, 2005Solids deposition in the horizontal pipeline of a pneumatic conveying system was studied both mathematically and experimentally. Mathematically modelled results using the coupled discrete element method (DEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach have demonstrated an intensive exchange of particles between the stationary layer (deposited ...

Slug velocity profiles in horizontal gas–liquid flow
Experiments in Fluids, 2002This work presents an experimental investigation of slug velocity in horizontal air–water flow. The velocity of gas–liquid interfaces was measured by cross-correlating the phase density function time series sampled by a pair of single-fiber optical probes.

Measurement Science and Technology, 2002
A method was developed for the measurement of velocity and slug length of two and three-phase flow in capillaries. The method consists of the combination of an impedance meter and two IR sensors. Non-intrusive measurement of the velocity can be performed with the IR sensors in gas-liquid and gas-liquid-liquid flow using the intrinsic absorbance of the ...
