A Dynamic Mixed Model for General Circulation Models

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2023
An extension of the dynamic Smgarorinsky model (DSM) is presented. In the so-called dynamic mixed model (DMM), the Leonard stress (i.e., the resolved part of the Reynolds stress) is no longer parameterized in the test filter range by the Smagorinsky ...

A comparison of different solutions for the Dynamic Smagorinsky Model applied in a GCM

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2018
A discussion of different approaches and solutions of the basic tensor equation within the Dynamic Smagorinsky Model (DSM) suitable for General Circulation Models (GCM) is presented.

Assessment of LES Dynamic Smagorinsky-Lilly model resolution for combustion engineering applications

open access: yesDyna, 2023
Large Eddy Simulation (LES) has become a powerful tool for dealing with turbulence. Nevertheless, mesh resolution of the simulated domain under the LES approach was shown to be a key matter.

Fourier neural operator approach to large eddy simulation of three-dimensional turbulence

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Mechanics Letters, 2022
Fourier neural operator (FNO) model is developed for large eddy simulation (LES) of three-dimensional (3D) turbulence. Velocity fields of isotropic turbulence generated by direct numerical simulation (DNS) are used for training the FNO model to predict ...

Character education as curriculum‐making in the humanities: A scoping review

open access: yesThe Curriculum Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract This scoping review examines how character education is conceptualised and enacted within humanities curricula across international contexts. While character education is widely promoted as supporting the development of ethical, civic and relational dispositions, its place within curriculum design remains contested, particularly in subjects ...

Forced Draught Impact on Externally Venting Flames: An Experimental and Numerical Investigation

open access: yesFire and Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Wind can significantly influence fire development and spread in urban and forest environments causing fatal consequences for the public, the first responders, and the environment. Wind‐driven fires can have a significant impact on structural fires as wind can increase the fire's intensity, development, and flame spread.

Enhancing smoothed particle hydrodynamics for turbulent flow simulation: implementation of the dynamic Smagorinsky model

open access: yesEngineering Applications of Computational Fluid Mechanics
This study focuses on advancing the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method to achieve a more accurate simulation of turbulent flows. SPH is a Lagrangian-based mesh-free method that is widely used in fluid dynamics because of its adaptability to ...

Impact of Subgrid-Scale Modeling in Actuator-Line Based Large-Eddy Simulation of Vertical-Axis Wind Turbine Wakes

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2018
A large-eddy simulation (LES) study of vertical-axis wind turbine wakes under uniform inflow conditions is performed. Emphasis is placed on exploring the effects of subgrid-scale (SGS) modeling on turbine loading as well as on the formation and ...

The evaluation of boundary‐layer turbulence in high‐resolution numerical weather prediction simulations using Doppler lidar

open access: yesQuarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, EarlyView.
A new method compares both kilometer and sub‐kilometre weather model simulations with Doppler lidar observations to assess the representation of boundary‐layer turbulence. While bulk boundary‐layer properties are well represented, vertical velocity variance is strongly underestimated in both simulations.

Constrained large-eddy simulation of laminar-turbulent transition in compressible channel flows

open access: yesAdvances in Aerodynamics, 2023
An improved approach for constrained large-eddy simulations (CLES) of wall-bounded compressible transitional flows is proposed by introducing an intermittency factor.
