Neoplasms of the small bowel [PDF]
Tumors of the small bowel are uncommon and comprise about 5% of all gastrointestinal tumors. Carcinoma exceeds sarcoma in frequency, although of the sarcomas which occur in the gastrointestinal tract, 60% are found in the small bowel. Benign tumors of the small intestine are reported as extremely rare because they are more frequently asymptomatic.

The Small Bowel Enema in the Management of Small Bowel Obstruction
Australasian Radiology, 1983ABSTRACTIn 16 patients with clinical evidence of bowel obstruction and complex medical histories the small bowel was radiologically studied using the intubation method. Clinically significant information which altered the management was obtained in 15 cases.

The rarity, delayed presentation, and diagnostic difficulty of small-bowel tumors prompted this study.Charts were reviewed retrospectively for 85 patients with 89 small-bowel tumors (22 primary malignant, 23 primary benign, and 44 metastatic) over a 10-year period (1986-1996) at Louisiana State University Medical Center-Shreveport and two affiliated ...

WCE is a noninvasive diagnostic technique that visualizes the entire small intestine and identifies lesions in parts of the small bowel not reached by traditional endoscopy. Although further studies are needed to define the exact role of WCE for diagnosing and managing small bowel tumors, its sensitivity has been shown to be superior to PE and small ...

Anatomically, the small intestine comprises the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum and is of variable length (average of 4–6 m). Clinically, the term small intestine usually excludes the duodenum which is covered in Chapter 3. The jejunum refers to the proximal half of the small intestine commencing at the duodenojejunal junction, although there is no clear ...

The treatment of small bowel fistulas remains a difficult problem. Spontaneous closure rates of 30% are currently being achieved after 4 to 6 weeks of conservative therapy with bowel rest, TPN, octreotide, and control of sepsis. Resection of the fistulous bowel is warranted if fistula closure has not occurred by 4 to 6 weeks.

Radiologic investigations continue to play a pivotal role in the diagnosis of pathologic conditions of the small intestine despite enhancement of capsule endoscopy and double-balloon endoscopy. Imaging techniques continue to evolve and new techniques in MRI in particular, are being developed.Continued advances in computed tomography (CT) and MRI ...

Identifying patients with small bowel obstruction who need operative intervention and those who will fail nonoperative management is a challenge. Without indications for urgent intervention, a computed tomography scan with/without intravenous contrast should be obtained to identify location, grade, and etiology of the obstruction.
