Small bowel obstruction is a common indication for surgical consultation and is most commonly the result of adhesive disease from previous surgeries. Failure to appropriately recognize bowel obstruction can have significant consequences on bowel viability and can progress to significant intestinal loss, perforation, septicemia, and even death.
