Investigations of micro-notch effect on small fatigue crack initiation behaviour in nickel-based alloy GH4169: Experiments and simulations

, 2020
Small fatigue crack initiation behaviour in a series of specimens containing different sizes of micro-notch has been observed through RepliSet system during interrupted low cycle fatigue tests. From the replicating observations, very initial single crack

Experimental Determination of Crack Driving Forces for Small Cracks

Solid State Phenomena, 2016
The crack tip field of small fatigue cracks was measured using digital image correlation DIC. For this purpose, smooth specimen were fatigued until a certain amount of damage was visible on the surface. This specimens were then placed in a micro-tensile device in the SEM.

Investigation of small fatigue cracks—I. Plastic deformation associated with small fatigue cracks

Acta Metallurgica et Materialia, 1994
Abstract Small fatigue crack growth has been studied in two 7000 series aluminium alloys possessing different grain sizes. As it has been suggested that the relatively large plastic deformation associated with small fatigue cracks may explain thier fast growth rates compared to long cracks, the work focused on experimental measurement of the plastic ...

Closure behaviour of small cracks

Steel Research, 1990
Measurements of the initiation, growth, and closure behaviour of micro-cracks are reported for one ferritic and one austenitic low strength steel. Interferometric measurements of the COD of small surface cracks were performed with a resolution of 3 nm in order to measure the closure behaviour of micro-cracks. The van der Waals forces between atoms were

Crack Opening Displacement Measurements on Small Cracks in Fatigue

1988
A computerized interferometric displacement gage was used to monitor the crack mouth opening behavior of naturally initiated small fatigue cracks in the high-strength alloy Ti6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo. Complete load versus crack opening displacement curves were obtained for naturally initiated semicircular cracks of surface length as small as 50 µm.

Investigation of small fatigue cracks—II. A plasticity based model of small fatigue crack growth

Acta Metallurgica et Materialia, 1994
Abstract Based on experimental evidence from periodic plastic zone size, (PZS), measurements on growing small fatigue cracks, PZS ahead of crack tips has been suggested as a correlating parameter for small crack growth. In this paper, the PZS of small cracks are calculated by incorporating an equivalent friction stress into the BCS model.

Estimations of the T-stress for small cracks at notches

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2004
The T-stress is increasingly being recognized as an important additional stress field characterizing parameter in the analysis of cracked bodies. Using T-stress as the constraint parameter, the framework of failure assessments including the constraint effect has been established; and the effect of T-stress on fatigue crack propagation rate has been ...

Behavior of Small Fatigue Cracks

1996
Abstract This article defines different types of small cracks and identifies the different factors that influence small-crack behavior. Appropriate analysis techniques, including both rigorous scientific and practical engineering treatments, are briefly described.
