Automatic thresholding for defect detection

open access: yes, 2010
[[abstract]]Automatic thresholding has been widely used in the machine vision industry for automated visual inspection of defects. A commonly used thresholding technique, the Otsu method, provides satisfactory results for thresholding an image with a ...

Finding novel vulnerabilities of hypomorphic BRCA1 alleles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Synthetic lethality screens performed to identify novel vulnerabilities often model complete gene loss, thereby overlooking patient‐derived hypomorphic mutations. In this study, we have performed genome‐wide CRISPR screens on BRCA1 hypomorphic mutations, showing BRCA1I26A behaves like wild‐type, while BRCA1R1699Q mimics deficiency. Furthermore, we have

The Two-Dimensional, Rectangular, Guillotineable-Layout Cutting Problem with a Single Defect [PDF]

open access: yes
In this paper, a two-dimensional cutting problem is considered in which a single plate (large object) has to be cut down into a set of small items of maximal value.

MITF maintains genome stability in nonmelanocyte lineages

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
MITF is essential for melanocyte survival and acts as an oncogene in 10%–20% of melanomas. We show that MITF depletion causes genome instability in nonmelanocytic cells, leading to LATS2‐mediated P53 activation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis. This study highlights the role of MITF as a genome maintenance factor beyond the melanocyte lineage. Created

Defect-Rich Porous CoS1.097/MoS2 Hybrid Microspheres as Electrocatalysts for pH-Universal Hydrogen Evolution

open access: yes, 2019
As a clean and promising hydrogen production process, the electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is particularly important. However, its electrocatalytic activity is usually limited by the acid or base environment of the electrolyte.

Large‐scale bidirectional arrayed genetic screens identify OXR1 and EMC4 as modifiers of αSynuclein aggregation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Activation of the mitochondrial protein OXR1 increases pSyn129 αSynuclein aggregation by lowering ATP levels and altering mitochondrial membrane potential, particularly in response to MSA‐derived fibrils. In contrast, ablation of the ER protein EMC4 enhances autophagic flux and lysosomal clearance, broadly reducing α‐synuclein aggregates.

Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

Real-time detection of powder bed defects in laser powder bed fusion using deep learning on 3D point clouds

open access: yesVirtual and Physical Prototyping
Powder bed defects are critical factors affecting the print quality and stability in Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). However, traditional 2D image-based powder bed defect monitoring methods are limited by sensitivity to lighting conditions and ...
