Heavy metal pollution assessment in marine sediments in the Northwest coast of Sabah, Malaysia
Heavy metal contents along the Northwest coast of Sabah were determined to interpret the pollution level in the marine sediment. The metal abundance is regulated by the physico-chemical properties such as the average sediment pH (7.82, 9.00 and 8.99 ...

Small Island With Big Rewards [PDF]
[Excerpt] Each leg of a trip to Chappy, as residents know it, begins with a formidable bottleneck. First you must get to Cape Cod through the gantlet of traffic on U.S. Route 6 between the interstate highways and the Bourne Bridge.

By dawn or dusk—how circadian timing rewrites bacterial infection outcomes
The circadian clock shapes immune function, yet its influence on infection outcomes is only beginning to be understood. This review highlights how circadian timing alters host responses to the bacterial pathogens Salmonella enterica, Listeria monocytogenes, and Streptococcus pneumoniae revealing that the effectiveness of immune defense depends not only

Sea level rise impact modelling on small islands: case study gili raja island of east java
Coastal regions and small islands are areas that will be adversely affected by the phenomenon of sea level rise globally. In general, Sea Level Rise (SLR) will result in coastal impacts as follows: increased frequency and intensity of floods, changes in ...

Small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs) offer the promise of providing carbon-free electricity and heat to small islands or isolated electricity grids. However, the economic feasibility of SMRs is highly system-dependent and has not been studied in this ...

How do individual cognitive differences relate to acceptability judgments?: A reply to Sprouse, Wagers, and Phillips [PDF]
Sprouse, Wagers, and Phillips (2012) carried out two experiments in which they measured individual differences in memory to test processing accounts of island effects. They found that these individual differences failed to predict the magnitude of island

A synthetic benzoxazine dimer derivative targets c‐Myc to inhibit colorectal cancer progression
Benzoxazine dimer derivatives bind to the bHLH‐LZ region of c‐Myc, disrupting c‐Myc/MAX complexes, which are evaluated from SAR analysis. This increases ubiquitination and reduces cellular c‐Myc. Impairing DNA repair mechanisms is shown through proteomic analysis.

The relationship between anabolic and catabolic processes governing lung cancer cell growth is nuanced. We show that ATG4B, an autophagy regulator, is elevated in lung cancer and that high ATG4B is associated with worse patient outcomes. Targeting ATG4B in cells reduces growth, protein synthesis, and mTORC1 activity, demonstrating a new relationship ...

Coulomb Charging at Large Conduction
We discuss the suppression of Coulomb charging effects on a small metallic island coupled to an electrode by a tunnel junction. At high temperatures the quantum corrections to the classical charging energy $E_c=e^2/2C$, where $C$ is the island ...
