Thermodynamic Properties of Small Systems
Physical Review, 1961We investigate the dependence of the pressure of a homogeneous system, at a given density $\ensuremath{\rho}$ and temperature $T$, on the number of particles $N$. The particles of the system are assumed to interact via forces of finite range $a$ and are confined to a periodic cube of volume ${L}^{3}$, $\ensuremath{\rho}\ensuremath{\equiv}\frac{N}{{L ...

Expert systems for small businesses
Information & Management, 1988Abstract Small business contribute significantly to the economy. New information system technologies, like expert systems have the promise of improving the efficiency and competitiveness of small businesses. This paper reviews the issues related to application of expert systems in a small business and discusses their capabilities and limitations. The

This paper discusses SNA/LEN, a possible extension of Systems Network Architecture intended to allow peer, dynamic, and easy to use networking functions for a variety of node sizes down to and including the new generation of personal computers. After reviewing the special requirements posed by small systems and the need for including them as equal ...

Kinetics of autocatalysis in small systems
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 2008Autocatalysis is a ubiquitous chemical process that drives a plethora of biological phenomena, including the self-propagation of prions etiological to the Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy. To explain the dynamics of these systems, we have solved the chemical master equation for the irreversible autocatalytic reaction A+B ...

Small but Smart: Small States in the Global System
2009Small states, often island or enclaves, frequently make news headlines because of their economic or political instabilities: the ‘failed state’ of the Solomon Islands, the imminent collapse of Nauru, the crisis of East Timor, and ethnic tensions and coups in Fiji are but recent examples.

Magnetoresistance of small Kondo systems
Physical Review B, 1996Results for the low-temperature magnetoresistance of thin Au films containing \ensuremath{\sim}30 ppm Fe are reported. As expected, we observe contributions from both the classical magnetoresistance and the local magnetic moments (i.e., the Fe).
