Smart polymers react sharply to small changes in physical or chemical conditions and present an intelligent response to chemical stimuli (i.e., chemical species -including biomolecules-, pH, solvents, redox, stimuli that trigger controlled depolymerization) and physical stimuli (i.e., temperature, light, mechanical stress and electrical stimuli).

Smart Polymers with Special Wettability
Small, 2016Surface wettability plays a key role in addressing issues ranging from basic life activities to our daily life, and thus being able to control it is an attractive goal. Learning from nature, both of its structure and function, brings us much inspiration in designing smart polymers to tackle this major challenge.

Water-repellent layers on the surface of leaves keep plants healthy, but also make it difficult to spray crops effectively with pesticides. Adding a low level of flexible polymers in the solution may be the answer, by stopping the drops from bouncing off.

Elastin-like polymers are a new family of proteinaceous polymers. In these polymers converge a wide set of interesting properties that difficultly can be found together in other polymers. They are extremely biocompatible and show an acute smart and self-assembling behaviour.

Smart Polymer Composite Thermistor
MRS Proceedings, 1999AbstractAn industrially important class of passively smart materials is electrically nonlinear polymer composites. The transition of conducting composites from low to high resistivity can be utilized for current limitation. Due to Joule losses the material is heated by a fault or short-circuit current.
