A low-cost 3-D printed stethoscope connected to a smartphone
2016 38th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC), 2016We demonstrate the fabrication of a digital stethoscope using a 3D printer and commercial off-the-shelf electronics. A chestpiece consists of an electret microphone embedded into the drum of a 3D printed chestpiece. An electronic dongle amplifies the signal from the microphone and reduces any external noise.

A 3-phase threshold algorithm for smartphone-based fall detection
2017 14th International Conference on Electrical Engineering/Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications and Information Technology (ECTI-CON), 2017Falls are one of the prominent causes of injury in elderly. A fall detection could help reduce the health risk following the fall that would otherwise get overlooked. Many research studies mostly focus on distinguish a fall from other activities in daily life using smartphone. However, one major problem is a false positive created by a smartphone drop.

Antibiotic residues in animal-derived food pose a risk to food safety and human health. Here, a smartphone-based pH-responsive 3-channel colorimetric biosensor is constructed for rapid detection of non-enzymatic multi-antibiotic residues in milk. In this system, a magnetic separation and enrichment approach is designed to specifically capture different

IoT system for Human Activity Recognition using BioHarness 3 and Smartphone
Proceedings of the International Conference on Future Networks and Distributed Systems, 2017This paper presents an Internet of Things (IoT) approach to Human Activity Recognition (HAR) using remote monitoring of vital signs in the context of a healthcare system for self-managed chronic heart patients. Our goal is to create a HAR-IoT system using learning algorithms to infer the activity done within 4 categories (lie, sit, walk and run) as ...

Patients with implantable left ventricular assist devices (LVAD) are at risk of ventricular arrhythmias but these may be hemodynamically tolerated. An electrocardiogram (ECG) is essential to determine whether an LVAD-supported patient is experiencing a ventricular arrhythmia. Access to 12 lead ECG is predominantly in healthcare facilities. Implantable

Improving smartphone downlink performance and energy efficiency with 3-antenna receive diversity
2014 International Conference on Computing, Networking and Communications (ICNC), 20143-antenna receive diversity is implemented within a smartphone form-factor to achieve gains in throughput (30% in median, 50% in the tail) and energy per bit over 2 antennas, with minimal increase to antenna volume even when supporting both low and high bands such as CELL (800 MHz) and PCS (1.9 GHz).
