Radiation-Stability of Smectite
Environmental Science & Technology, 2008The safety assessment of geological repositories for high-level nuclear waste and spent nuclear fuel requires an understanding of the response of materials to high temperatures and intense radiation fields. Clays, such as smectite, have been proposed as backfill material around waste packages, but their response to intense radiation from short-lived ...

Atrazine Desorption from Smectites
Soil Science Society of America Journal, 1994Abstract In soils low in organic matter, pesticide adsorption and desorption by clay minerals may strongly influence the fate of pesticides in soil environments. Atrazine (2‐chloro‐4‐ethylamino‐6‐isopropylamino‐1,3,5‐triazine) adsorption‐desorption was determined on 11 reference smectites (<2‐µm size fraction), and a soil smectite (

Smectite Interactions with Flavomononucleotide
Clays and Clay Minerals, 1984AbstractAdsorption isotherms and UV-visible and Mössbauer spectroscopic data point to specific interactions between flavomononucleotide (FMN) and Fe3+-smectite. The maximum amount of FMN adsorption was 0.3 mmole/g of Fe3+-smectite giving a 1:1 molar proportion of Fe3+ and FMN.

Phase relations among smectite, R1 illite-smectite, and illite
American Mineralogist, 1997A variety of smectitic and illitic clays were studied by TEM and AEM, following ex- pansion by L.R. White resin, to define phase relations for clay minerals undergoing di- genesis and low-grade metamorphism. Samples included a prograde shale sequence from the Gulf Coast, a hydrothermal bentonite from Zempleni, Hungary, and shales from the Nankai Trough,

AbstractThe changes in amount and location of layer charge during diagenetic alteration have been investigated for smectites and smectite layers of illite/smectite interstratified minerals (I/S) by X-ray powder diffraction analysis with various expansion behavior tests: 1) ethylene glycol (EG) solvation (XRD); 2) K-saturation and EG solvation; 3) Li ...

Acrylonitrile-smectite complexes
Clay Minerals, 1991AbstractThe adsorption of acrylonitrile (AN) monomer vapour in the interlamellar space of smectites exchanged with different cations (Na or Y or hexylammonium) was monitored and used to yield macromolecular layers. Polymerization in the presence or absence of a free-radical initiator was obtained by heating at 100°C for 72 h. Cyclization can already be

AbstractHydroxy-chromium solutions were prepared from chromium nitrate solutions by adding NaOH with OH/Cr = 2.The solutions were treated at 20°C and 60°C. The hydrolysis times were from 1 to 100 days. Polymeric species in hydrolyzed chromium solutions were followed by visible absorption spectra within the range 325–800 nm and by pH measurement.

Interaction of Rimsulfuron with Smectites
Clays and Clay Minerals, 1997AbstractThe adsorption of the sulfonylurea herbicide rimsulfuron, [N-((4,6-dimethoxypyrimidin-2-yl)aminocarbonyl)-3-(ethylsulfonyl)-2-pyridinesulfonamide], on clay minerals with different saturating cations was studied. Three smectites with different lattice charge distribution (hectorite, montmorillonite and nontronite) were selected and made ...
