Surgical Smoke

open access: yesAsian Journal of Surgery, 2009
Surgical smoke is the gaseous by-product formed during surgical procedures. Most surgeons, operating theatre staff and administrators are unaware of its potential health risks. Surgical smoke is produced by various surgical instruments including those used in electrocautery, lasers, ultrasonic scalpels, high speed drills, burrs and saws.

Depolarization and lidar ratios at 355, 532, and 1064 nm and microphysical properties of aged tropospheric and stratospheric Canadian wildfire smoke

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2018
. We present spectrally resolved optical and microphysical properties of western Canadian wildfire smoke observed in a tropospheric layer from 5–6.5 km height and in a stratospheric layer from 15–16 km height during a record-breaking smoke event on 22 ...

Sex Differences in Medication Discontinuation in Axial Spondyloarthritis

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective We examined sex differences in medication discontinuation among patients with axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) initiating tumor necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi), interleukin‐17 inhibitors (IL‐17i), or JAK inhibitors (JAKi). Methods Using data from the Rheumatology Informatics System for Effectiveness (RISE) Registry (2003–2025), we assessed ...

Is Smoking Delayed Smoking Averted?

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Public Health, 2003
Antismoking efforts often target teenagers in the hope of producing a new generation of never smokers. Teenagers are more responsive to tobacco taxes than are adults. The author summarizes recent evidence suggesting that delaying smoking initiation among teenagers through higher taxes does not generate proportionate reductions in prevalence rates ...

Long-range-transported Canadian smoke plumes in the lower stratosphere over northern France

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2019
. Long-range-transported Canadian smoke layers in the stratosphere over northern France were detected by three lidar systems in August 2017. The peaked optical depth of the stratospheric smoke layer exceeds 0.20 at 532 nm, which is comparable with the ...

Combining Three Peripheral Blood Biomarkers to Stratify Rheumatoid Arthritis–Associated Interstitial Lung Disease Risk

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective The purpose was to evaluate a biomarker score consisting of MUC5B rs35705950 promoter variant, plasma matrix metalloproteinase‐7 (MMP‐7), and serum anti–malondialdehyde‐acetaldehyde (anti‐MAA) antibody for rheumatoid arthritis (RA)–associated interstitial lung disease (ILD) risk stratification.

The Significance of Air Circulation and Hearth Location at Paleolithic Cave Sites

open access: yesOpen Quaternary, 2019
Hearths were constructed and used at Paleolithic cave and rockshelter sites in Africa, Europe and Asia as early as the late Lower Paleolithic period. The advantages of the use of fire have been widely researched for the last decades.

Dust and Smoke Detection for Multi-Channel Imagers

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2010
A detection algorithm of dust and smoke for application to satellite multi-channel imagers is introduced in this paper. The algorithm is simple and solely based on spectral and spatial threshold tests along with some uniformity texture.

Temporal Trends and Short‐ and Long‐Term Mortality of People With Acute Myocardial Infarction and Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Nationwide Cohort Study

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective We investigated whether a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects the quality of inpatient acute myocardial infarction (AMI) care and long‐term mortality post‐AMI. Methods We analyzed data from 784,091 adults, 6,047 with a diagnosis of RA, from England and Wales hospitalized with AMI between 2005 and 2019 from the Myocardial Ischaemia ...
