Smoke and Soil Acidity

Botanical Gazette, 1924
In the trucking section of South Philadelphia the air is often heavily loaded with combustion products from great industrial plants, railroad engines, and other sources. The soils of this region, consisting of Sassafras loam, are somewhat acid but not more so than another area of the same soil type at Monmouth Junction, New Jersey, where there is ...

Smoke deposition to water surfaces drives hydrochemical changes

Hydrological Processes, 2022
This study presents a unique data set from a laboratory experiment where we explored changes in the chemical composition of deionized water samples exposed to smoke.

Cigarette smoke degrades hyaluronic acid

Lung, 1989
Cigarette smoke has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a variety of diseases that affect connective tissues. The effect of the gas phase of cigarette smoke on hyaluronic acid was investigated in vitro. The smoke markedly reduced the chain length of purified hyaluronic acid as assessed by both viscometry and gel chromatography.

Carbon Offsets Up in Smoke

Natural areas journal, 2022
The carbon cycles that you probably learned about in school look quite complicated, don’t they? Lots of boxes and arrows flying in different directions. But, in reality, the carbon cycle, as it occurs out in the real world, is actually more complex than ...

Effect of Smoking on Gastric Acid Secretion

Australian and New Zealand Journal of Medicine, 1973
Summary: The effect of smoking on gastric acid secretion was studied in 16 smokers and 16 non-smokers. The basal, smoking, and peak acid outputs were determined. Statistical analysis showed the following results: No significant difference was found between the mean basal acid output and mean smoking acid output, in both smokers and non-smokers.

Source-dependent compositional changes in coconut flavoured liquid smoke and its application in traditional Indian smoked fishery products

Food Additives and Contaminants Part A-chemistry Analysis Control Exposure & Risk Assessment, 2020
Smoking is an age-old food preservation method. Intense smoking results in deposition of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in food. Replacing traditional smoking practices with application of liquid smoke or smoke flavouring is proven ...

Engineering Modified Mesoporous Silica Catalysts through Porosity and Surface Acidity Control for Selective Production of DME

, 2021
DME has been received the attention as a renewable energy due to its thermal efficiencies equivalent to diesel fuel, lower NOx emission, near-zero smoke and non-toxic. DME can be obtained by methanol dehydration over solid acid catalysts or directly from

Fetal Amino Acid and Enzyme Levels With Maternal Smoking

Obstetrics & Gynecology, 1999
To assess the influence of active maternal smoking on fetal amino acid and enzyme levels in early pregnancy. The concentrations of 23 free amino acids and total protein, and the activity levels of four enzymes were measured in samples of maternal and fetal plasma from nine nonsmokers who were not exposed to tobacco smoke and nine long-term, heavy ...

Folic acid, Vitamin B12, and homocysteine in smoking and non-smoking pregnant women

European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, 2002
Lower plasma levels of vitamins may result in hyperhomocysteinemia, a known risk factor in pregnancy. As smoking may alter nutrition, we were interested in its effect on folate and Vitamin B(12) in pregnancy.A cross-sectional study of 62 smoking and 76 non-smoking healthy pregnant women. Serum folic acid, Vitamin B(12) and homocysteine were measured at
