Transfer Entropy for Nonparametric Granger Causality Detection: An Evaluation of Different Resampling Methods

open access: yesEntropy, 2017
The information-theoretical concept transfer entropy is an ideal measure for detecting conditional independence, or Granger causality in a time series setting.

Smoothed Bootstrap Methods for Right-Censored Data and Bivariate Data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
This thesis introduces a smoothed bootstrap method for univariate right-censored data and investigates this bootstrap method for the coverage probability and survival function inferences through simulations.

Statistical evaluation of waveform collapse reveals scale-free properties of neuronal avalanches

open access: yesFrontiers in Computational Neuroscience, 2016
Neural avalanches are a prominent form of brain activity characterized by network-wide bursts whose statistics follow a power-law distribution with a slope near 3/2.

Robust estimation of the expected survival probabilities from high-dimensional Cox models with biomarker-by-treatment interactions in randomized clinical trials

open access: yesBMC Medical Research Methodology, 2017
Background Thanks to the advances in genomics and targeted treatments, more and more prediction models based on biomarkers are being developed to predict potential benefit from treatments in a randomized clinical trial.

Long‐Term Follow‐Up of Chemotherapy‐Associated Biological Aging in Women With Early Breast Cancer

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
Women threated with adjuvant chemotherapy for early breast cancer have sustained long‐term increase in p16INK4a,, a robust marker of cell senescence, suggesting a chemotherapy‐associated age acceleration. p16INK4a as well as other biomarkers may identify patients at greatest risk for senescence‐related diseases of aging.

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for

AI–Guided 4D Printing of Carnivorous Plants–Inspired Microneedles for Accelerated Wound Healing

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents an artificial intelligence (AI)‐guided 4D‐printed microneedle platform inspired by carnivorous plants for wound healing. A thermo‐responsive shape memory polymer enables body temperature–triggered self‐coiling for autonomous wound closure.

Direct Measurement of the Singlet Lifetime and Photoexcitation Behavior of the Boron Vacancy Center in Hexagonal Boron Nitride

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Negatively charged boron vacancy defects in hexagonal boron nitride promise near‐surface quantum sensing, but their internal spin transition rates are only partly understood. This work directly measures the defect's singlet‐state lifetime, 15(3) ns, using a nanosecond rise‐time dual‐pulse photoluminescence‐recovery method, and shows that high laser ...

Alternative Smoothed Bootstraps

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Statistical Society Series B: Statistical Methodology, 1990
SUMMARY Bootstrap estimation of simple population functionals is considered. The smoothed bootstrap (Efron, 1979, 1982) is compared with an alternative estimation procedure based on resampling ideas of Kendall and Kendall (1980). Specific examples of the estimation problem are considered, showing that the competing estimators may display
