Smoothing ‘smooth’ numbers

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A: Physical and Engineering Sciences, 1993
An integer is called y-smooth if all of its prime factors are ⩽ y . An important problem is to show that the y -smooth integers up to x are equi-distributed among short intervals.

Smoothness and uniform smoothness

2018
AbstractThe notions of smoothness and uniform smoothness of a space are discussed. The relation with differentiability of the norm is shown. The main tool, the modulus of smoothness of a space is studied.

Smooth Groups

Geometriae Dedicata, 2001
A group is called smooth if it has a finite maximal chain of subgroups in which any two intervals of the same length are isomorphic (as lattices). The author shows that every finite smooth group \(G\) is a semidirect product of a \(p\)-group \(P\) by a cyclic group; and if \(G\) is neither cyclic nor a \(p\)-group, then \(P\) is Abelian of exponent at ...

Smoothness and Asymptotic Smoothness

2012
This chapter describes the modulus of smoothness of a function in the direction of a family of subspaces and the much simpler notion of upper Fréchet differentiability. It also considers the notion of spaces admitting bump functions smooth in the direction of a family of subspaces with modulus controlled by ω‎(t).

Unimodal smoothing

Journal of Chemometrics, 2005
AbstractIn many applications it is expected from theory that a signal should be non‐negative and unimodal, that is, show only one peak. If the data are noisy, standard smoothing algorithms will not always give the desired result: peaks may be rounded and negative lobes may occur in the tails.

Smooth-muscle contraction without smooth-muscle myosin

Nature Cell Biology, 2000
Here we have used gene-targeting to eliminate expression of smooth-muscle myosin heavy chain. Elimination of this gene does not affect expression of non-muscle myosin heavy chain, and knockout individuals typically survive for three days. Prolonged activation, by KCl depolarisation, of intact bladder preparations from wild-type neonatal mice produces ...
