Snow avalanches have a substantial impact upon human activity in mountainous regions. In this article I employ a climatological framework to examine the mechanisms by which snow avalanches occur. This is followed by a discussion of the hydrologic and geomorphic aspects of avalanches, and an examination of the current state of research as regards ...

Fracture mechanics of snow avalanches
Physical Review E, 2001Dense snow avalanches are analyzed by modeling the snow slab as an elastic and brittle plate, attached by static friction to the underlying ground. The grade of heterogeneity in the local fracture (slip) thresholds, and the ratio of the average substrate slip threshold to the average slab fracture threshold, are the decisive parameters for avalanche ...

This work is a critical update of the most recent and innovative developments of the avalanche science. It aims at re-founding it on clear scientific bases, from field observations and experiments up to strong mathematical and physical analysis and modeling. It points out snow peculiarities, regarding both static mechanical properties and flow dynamics,

Pressure of Snow Avalanches against Buildings
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2011The paper aims to analyse the e ects of topography and building position on themagnitude of pressure exerted by snow avalanches against buildings, through a structural backanalysis and numerical uid-dynamics. Studying a real snow avalanche impact occurred in2008 which destroyed a village in Valsavarenche (Aosta Valley - IT), the attention is focused ...

Avalanche occurrence is closely related to the local meteorological conditions which may be quite variable in mountain topography. To investigate these conditions, and to provide information for avalanche forecasting, we designed and built a weather station which is currently relaying information to a base station from a remote site.

Avalanche is a generic word that describes various phenomena. In the case of snow avalanches, this diversity is closely linked to the diversity of properties of materials present within the flow. This is why the study of an avalanche site must be performed by an expert with a good field knowledge.

Actions of snow avalanches on a snow shed
2009The actions of snow avalanches on slightly inclined protection structures like snow sheds are a complex dynamic phenomenon. The impact stresses (normal and tangential) evolve not only in time but also in space. To better understand these actions so as to be able to design such structures, several studies have been conducted.
