Snow avalanches have a substantial impact upon human activity in mountainous regions. In this article I employ a climatological framework to examine the mechanisms by which snow avalanches occur. This is followed by a discussion of the hydrologic and geomorphic aspects of avalanches, and an examination of the current state of research as regards ...

This work is a critical update of the most recent and innovative developments of the avalanche science. It aims at re-founding it on clear scientific bases, from field observations and experiments up to strong mathematical and physical analysis and modeling. It points out snow peculiarities, regarding both static mechanical properties and flow dynamics,

Fracture mechanics of snow avalanches
Physical Review E, 2001Dense snow avalanches are analyzed by modeling the snow slab as an elastic and brittle plate, attached by static friction to the underlying ground. The grade of heterogeneity in the local fracture (slip) thresholds, and the ratio of the average substrate slip threshold to the average slab fracture threshold, are the decisive parameters for avalanche ...

ABSTRACT After a general introduction to snow avalanches and their consequences, type classification is discussed, and classification schemes based on morphology, genesis and magnitude are described briefly. The first technical section deals with deformation and displacement of snow slopes prior to avalanche release, with the failure process, and ...

Avalanche is a generic word that describes various phenomena. In the case of snow avalanches, this diversity is closely linked to the diversity of properties of materials present within the flow. This is why the study of an avalanche site must be performed by an expert with a good field knowledge.

How to control avalanche risks ? How to reduce the injured people and damage resulting from avalanches ? A group of scientists with expertise in the field of snow and avalanches met in Chamonix to take part in the first European Summer university on natural hazards organised by the " Pôle Grenoblois d'Etudes et de recherche pour la Prévention des ...

For alpine countries, avalanches represent one of the major hazards, threatening people in villages as well as on highways and railways. Measures have to be taken to reduce avalanche risk: Avalanche hazard mapping as a basis for land use planning is one of the most cost-effective measures to reduce or even avoid avalanche exposure.

Digital Animation of Powder-Snow Avalanches
ACM Transactions on GraphicsPowder-snow avalanches are natural phenomena that result from an instability in the snow cover on a mountain relief. It begins with a dense avalanche core moving fast down the mountain. During its evolution, the snow particles in the avalanche front mix with the air, forming a suspended turbulent cloud of snow dust surrounding the dense snow avalanche.

Avalanche occurrence is closely related to the local meteorological conditions which may be quite variable in mountain topography. To investigate these conditions, and to provide information for avalanche forecasting, we designed and built a weather station which is currently relaying information to a base station from a remote site.
