Possible erosion mechanisms in snow avalanches

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2004
AbstractSnow erosion and entrainment processes in avalanches are classified according to their mechanisms, the flow regimes in which they occur, and their spatial position within the avalanche. Simple, but process-specific, models are proposed for erosion by impacts, abrasion, plowing and blasting.

Deglaciation of the Burren glacio‐karst, western Ireland, during Termination 1: Implications for North Atlantic climate and karstification

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
Abstract The Burren uplands in western Ireland form one of the most extensive and best‐preserved examples of glacio‐karst in Europe. Subsumed by the Irish ice sheet during the Late Pleistocene, granite erratic boulders and in situ silica veins in the limestone bedrock provide a rare opportunity to reconstruct the timing and rate of deglaciation ...

Decoupling glacier retreat and surface stabilization on the Snežnik Plateau (Slovenia), insights from in situ cosmogenic 36Cl exposure and depth‐profile ages

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Glaciokarst landscapes pose distinctive challenges for cosmogenic dating because meltwater and runoff can be rapidly rerouted into ponors and conduit networks, weakening glacier–river coupling and promoting local sediment storage. We reconstruct glacier retreat and postglacial stabilization on the Snežnik Plateau (SW Slovenia) using in situ ...

Assessing plant water status: Part 2 – Non‐destructive and remote sensing approaches

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Precise, real time and non‐destructive assessment of plant water status is important for advancing plant physiological understanding, optimizing water usage, improving crop resilience and supporting precision agriculture in the face of increasingly variable climatic conditions.

Mechanics of the Ski-Snow Contact [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Two outstanding questions of the ski-snow friction are considered: the deformation mode of the snow and the real contact area. The deformation of hard, well sintered snow in a short time impact has been measured with a special linear friction tester ...

Particle tracking in snow avalanches with in situ calibrated inertial measurement units

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology
In the course of an artificially triggered avalanche, a particle tracking procedure is combined with supplementary measurements, including Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) positioning, terrestrial laser ...

Microstructure-based modelling of snow mechanics: experimental evaluation of the cone penetration test [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere
Snow is a complex porous material presenting a variety of microstructural patterns. This microstructure largely controls the mechanical properties of snow, although the relation between the micro and macro properties remains to be better understood ...

Discriminating Arid Ecosystems and Tracking Desertification Dynamics: Evidence From Grain‐Size End‐Member in the Manas River Basin, Northern Tianshan Mountains

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The ecosystem of the Manas River Basin, composed of mountains, oases, and deserts, constitutes an ideal natural laboratory for investigating surface processes and environmental evolution in arid regions. Elucidating the provenance, transport dynamics, and climate response mechanisms of surface sediments in this system is critical for advancing

Michael Snow : Photo-Centric

open access: yes, 2014
"Michael Snow: Photo-Centric focuses on a selection of the artist's photographic work from 1962 to the present. The book considers Snow's interest in late modernism's self-reflexivity and, specifically, his exploration of how the mechanics of photography
