Fracture mechanics of snow avalanches
Physical Review E, 2001Dense snow avalanches are analyzed by modeling the snow slab as an elastic and brittle plate, attached by static friction to the underlying ground. The grade of heterogeneity in the local fracture (slip) thresholds, and the ratio of the average substrate slip threshold to the average slab fracture threshold, are the decisive parameters for avalanche ...

Development of a Mechanism for Nitrate Photochemistry in Snow
The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2010A reaction mechanism to reproduce photochemical processes in the snow is reported. We developed a box model to represent snow chemistry. Constrained by laboratory experiments carried out with artificial snow, we deduced first a reaction mechanism for N-containing species including 13 reactions.

Development of the snow dragging mechanism for an autonomous snow eater robot
2010 IEEE/SICE International Symposium on System Integration, 2010The development of one part of the autonomous robot specialized in the snow removal task is presented in this paper. With a small size and light weight this robot will be a helpful partner in winter season. This study is focused in the dragging mechanism of the snow eater robot.

Mechanical analysis of the seasonal snow cover
Physics and Chemistry of the Earth, Part B: Hydrology, Oceans and Atmosphere, 2000Abstract A snow model has been developed to calculate the forces and displacements of a seasonal snow cover in order to obtain information on damage caused by snow to forestry plants and technological constructions. Two components of motion may be observed in a settled snowpack: creeping (internal deformation), depending on the internal body weight ...

Mechanized transport for snow surveying
Eos, Transactions American Geophysical Union, 1946This paper gives the reasons for increased interest in mechanizedtravel on snow, lists 12 characteristics to be noted in the performance of such a machine, and describes a series of field tests of a particular make of snow vehicle. This vehicle, which is described, met the requirements for performance.

Review Mechanical properties of ice and snow
Journal of Materials Science, 2003The mechanical properties of ice and snow are reviewed. The tensile strength of ice varies from 0.7–3.1 MPa and the compressive strength varies from 5–25 MPa over the temperature range −10°C to −20°C. The ice compressive strength increases with decreasing temperature and increasing strain rate, but ice tensile strength is relatively insensitive to ...

Mechanisms of Snow Mold Resistance in Wheat
2013Snow molds can limit production of winter wheat in regions that are prone to deep persistent snow during the winter. There are two mechanisms involved in resistance to snow molds: (1) genetic resistance varieties and (2) age-related resistance varieties.
