Temperature gradient snow metamorphosis

open access: yesPolar Research, 1985
This note shows how the rate of ice crystal growth during temperature gradient metamorphosis can be calculated using irreversible thermodynamics. The method describes the transfer of mass as a consequence of heat transfer. The main heat transfer is the latent heat change by condensing and freezing. Local equilibrium and no convection is assumed.

Seasonal Snowpack Classification Based on Physical Properties Using Near-Infrared Proximal Hyperspectral Data [PDF]

open access: yesSensors, 2021
This paper proposes an innovative method for classifying the physical properties of the seasonal snowpack using near-infrared (NIR) hyperspectral imagery to discriminate the optical classes of snow at different degrees of metamorphosis.

Disease, Drought, and Warming: A Triple Threat to a Declining High-Elevation Amphibian. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We developed a dynamic co‐occurrence occupancy model to explore the effects of climate change on the occupancy of boreal toads (Anaxyrus boreas) and the amphibian chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, Bd) in the southern Rocky Mountains. We derived novel covariates to test hypotheses related to multi‐generational impacts of climate on the ...

Louse Flies on the Fly: Host Macroecology Shapes Interspecific Variation in Ectoparasite Prevalence Among Migrating Birds. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
We analysed over 100,000 migrating birds from 157 species to identify macroecological drivers of interspecific variation in louse fly prevalence. Using phylogenetically informed Bayesian models, we show that host morphology, ecology and biogeographic traits shape infection patterns, with Ornithomya avicularia and O.

Large Igneous Province Record Through Time and Implications for Secular Environmental Changes and Geological Time‐Scale Boundaries

open access: yesGeophysical Monograph Series, Page 1-26., 2021

Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact

An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions.

Annual and inter-annual variability and trends of albedo of Icelandic glaciers [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2021
During the melt season, absorbed solar energy, modulated at the surface predominantly by albedo, is one of the main governing factors controlling surface-melt variability for glaciers in Iceland.

In situ effective snow grain size mapping using a compact hyperspectral imager

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2021
Effective snow grain radius (re) is mapped at high resolution using near-infrared hyperspectral imaging (NIR-HSI). The NIR-HSI method can be used to quantify re spatial variability, change in re due to metamorphism, and visualize water percolation in the

Large-ensemble climate simulations to assess changes in snow stability over northern Japan

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2023
To examine the influence of global warming including increased heavy snowfall frequency on the potential of natural dry snow avalanche frequency and magnitude, we estimated the frequency of weak layer formation and the associated slab overload above the ...

Changes in the Structure of the Snow Cover of Hansbreen (S Spitsbergen) Derived from Repeated High-Frequency Radio-Echo Sounding

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2022
This paper explores the potential of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) monitoring for an advanced understanding of snow cover processes and structure. For this purpose, the study uses the Hansbreen (SW Spitsbergen) records that are among the longest and the

Response of snowpack to +2°C global warming in Hokkaido, Japan

open access: yesJournal of Glaciology, 2020
The response of snowpack to a +2°C global warming relative to the present climate was estimated in Hokkaido, Japan, using a physical snowpack model driven by dynamically downscaled (DDS) data, after model evaluation.
