A METHOD OF MEASURING SNOW PARTICLE SIZE FROM VIDEO IMAGES FOR METEOROLOGICAL RADAR OBSERVATIONS

open access: yesA METHOD OF MEASURING SNOW PARTICLE SIZE FROM VIDEO IMAGES FOR METEOROLOGICAL RADAR OBSERVATIONS
For meteorological radar observations, it is very important to know the size and the characteristics of precipitation particles. In this paper, we report a method to measure snow particle size using snow particle video images. An image of snow particles, which was recorded by a specially designed portable video camera set on the ground, was digitized ...

Soil extracellular enzymes drive soil carbon accumulation under elevated CO2

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 2, Page 347-359, February 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Human‐driven increases in atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) are stimulating plant growth, thereby increasing the input of plant‐derived carbon into soils. The fate of this additional carbon depends on the capacity of soil microbiomes to decompose and transform organic matter, a ...

Use of Microbial Biofilms to Assess Groundwater Quality in Karstic Ecosystems

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 2, February 2026.
Analyses of prokaryotic diversity and community structures of biofilms showed variations linked to the nutrient and organic matter conditions in the studied karstic stations. Biofilms developed on artificial substrates appeared as promising indicators to assess groundwater quality in karst.

Understanding the Future Dynamics of the Historic Rice Fields' Ecohydrological Systems Under Changing Climatic Conditions

open access: yesJAWRA Journal of the American Water Resources Association, Volume 62, Issue 1, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Historic rice‐field watersheds in Georgetown County, South Carolina, experience climate‐driven hydrologic changes threatening waterfowl habitat. The reproducible GIS–Python workflow combines HUC‐scale delineation with ArcGIS Pro processing and MACA‐v2 downscaled climate analysis through grouped cross‐validation to measure and explain stream ...

Agricultural Water Manager Perspectives on Water Markets in Utah

open access: yesJAWRA Journal of the American Water Resources Association, Volume 62, Issue 1, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Irrigation organizations (IOs) in the arid US West manage water supply, own water rights, and deliver water shares to their users. In delivering most of the water used for irrigated agriculture, the influence of the water managers who run them on water futures cannot be overstated. Yet, the perspectives of both water managers and IOs regarding
