Cloud microphysical properties of a mixed phase cloud generated by a typical extratropical cyclone in the Tongliao area, Inner Mongolia on 3 May 2014, are analyzed primarily using in situ flight observation data. This study is mainly focused on ice crystal concentration, supercooled cloud water content, and vertical distributions of fit parameters of ...

Measurement of snow particle size and speed in powder snow avalanches
2015Generally snow avalanches consist a dense-flow layer at the bottom and a powder snow cloud on top. Snow particle size and speed are key parameters to describe the turbulent condition in the powder cloud, however, the information on the particles were not well investigated. In this study, we observed powder snow avalanches using a snow particle counter (

AbstractIn this study, snow particle size variability was investigated along a transect in Dronning Maud Land from the coast to the polar plateau. The aim of the study was to better understand the spatial and temporal variations in surface snow properties.

The snow medium is treated as densely packed sticky ice particles following a size distribution. We apply the quasicrystalline approximation (QCA) dense medium theory to calculate the absorption, scattering and emission of snow at multiple frequencies.

Abstract Blowing snow is a frequent and significant winter weather event, and there is currently a need for more observations and measurements of blowing snow, especially in arctic and subarctic environments. This is the first paper in a two part series studying blowing snow in Churchill, Manitoba, and Franklin Bay, NWT. In this part, the development

Measurements of blowing snow: size distribution of snow particles at Lac blanc pass, French Alps
2011Wind-transported snow is a common phenomenon in French Alps, creating snowdrifts and contributing significantly to the loading of avalanche release areas. Some studies have already been conducted to address the size distribution of snow particles at a given height (Budd (1966), Schmidt (1982), Nishimura and Nemoto (2005), Gordon and Taylor (2009 ...

There was a significant snowfall event in North China from November 23 to 25 in 2015. Considering that most of the bare surface and road dust were covered by snow, the effect of dust and soil could be ignored. Atmospheric particle samples were collected in Zhengzhou, China during a haze event from November 28 to December 4, 2015.

Measurements of the aerosol size distribution in the diameter range 0.003–20 μm were made by a scanning mobility particle sizer SMPS and an aerodynamic particle sizer APS at Maitri 70° 45′ 52′′ S, 11° 44′ 03′′ E, Antarctica during the 24th Indian Antarctic Expedition, which took place in January and February 2005. Time-elapsed evolutions of the aerosol

Abstract A simple method has been devised for taking shadow photographs of snow crystals, or of their melt water, without use of a lens. It permits study of the form, size, and mass characteristics at intervals of several minutes during a snowfall. As an application of the method, the coalescence of crystals was studied.
